Currently, Asia and North America are braced for the possibility of a nuclear confrontation between the United States and North Korea. The situation got this bad thanks to two former US presidents.
Democratic presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama essentially submitted to the communist regime of Pyongyang and the mullahs of Tehran. Because of their horrible deals, North Korea and Iran are now nuclear nations (via The Federalist Papers).
Failed diplomacy began in October 1994. At that time, North Korea was run by another crazed dictator, Kim Jong-Il. American President Bill Clinton told the American people that he and Kim had reached a nuclear deal that was “good” for America.
“North Korea will freeze and then dismantle its nuclear program. South Korea and our other allies will be better protected. The entire world will be safer as we slow the spread of nuclear weapons,” President Clinton said.
The deal that Clinton touted as a success gave Pyongyang oil and $4 billion in international investments. Rather than bring North Korea closer to the global community, this deal helped to finance Kim’s weapons buildup and the beginning of his country’s nuclear program.
At the same time, North Korea experienced a terrible famine that may have killed millions of its own citizens, thus proving that none of the international money went towards helping the North Korean people.
Clinton’s Democratic successor, Barrack Obama, practiced “strategic patience” in regards to the regime of Kim Jong-un. What this really meant is that Obama left North Korea alone to develop its terrible nuclear program.
In repeating President Clinton, Obama reached a nuclear deal with Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of Islamic terrorism. Obama claimed that his deal was “historic” and would keep Iran from producing nuclear missiles.
In reality, Obama’s administration gave away millions of taxpayer dollars to Iran in secret deals that have helped Tehran to finance not only its nuclear program, but also its wars in Syria and Iraq. The reduction of sanctions on Iran has helped Iranian airlines to fly Iraqi and Iranian militia fighters all across the Middle East.
Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama made deals with North Korea and Iran that empowered these regimes. Did their actions set up the dangerous scenarios we face today?
In essence, Obama’s Iran nuclear deal undermined not only security in the Middle East, but also harmed President Obama’s own approach and policy goals in Syria. After all, the Obama administration sought to remove President Bashar al-Assad by arming rebel militias. However, by dumping millions in Iran, Obama financed Iran’s more successful efforts at keeping President Assad in power.
Thanks to these two weak leaders, the American territory of Guam and the state of Hawaii have stepped up their defenses after Pyongyang has threatened to bomb both. Both Guam and Hawaii are currently trying to increase funding for public warning systems and other measures designed to keep their citizens safe from a North Korean attack.
Thanks to feckless leadership, America now faces the very real possibility of a nuclear conflict in the 21st century. If war starts, there is a very serious chance that millions of South Koreans, Japanese, and American citizens could die. Hopefully, President Trump makes the right decision to keep such death from happening.
