Donald Trump’s unwavering support for the national anthem has brought him enormous backlash from the political Left and the media. Despite the press’ narrative of universal opposition to Trump’s remarks, new data suggests the President has sided with the majority of the American people.
According to Breitbart, a new poll released by Remington Research Group shows that most Americans want to see NFL players stand in respect during the national anthem. Additionally, the poll indicates that the politicization of football games is turning fans away.
The numbers are truly worrisome for the NFL. Remington Research asked respondents a number of different questions to gauge their position on what is currently the most heatedly debated cultural issue in the US.
The results run contrary to the general wisdom of the Left-leaning mainstream media, which holds that Trump is out of place to rebuke professional football players who choose to kneel during the national anthem as a form of protest.
Ensuring to address Trump’s involvement in the issue, pollsters asked the question: “Last week, Donald Trump said NFL players should stand and be respectful during the national anthem. Do you think NFL players should stand and be respectful during the national anthem?”
Surprisingly, a full 64 percent of those polled said “yes.” Only 25 percent said “no,” while 11 percent were unsure. Additionally, fans left no doubt how the protests are affecting their viewership. NFL players and executives who support the national anthem protests appear to be of touch with most of the country.
The next question read: “On Sunday, a number of NFL players knelt during the national anthem in protest of Donald Trump’s statements, including players from your favorite team. Does this make you more likely or less likely to watch your favorite team’s games in the future?”
Of those asked, 50 percent said it made them “less likely.” There were 30 percent who said “more likely” and 20 percent who were unsure. Subsequent questions spelled bad news for the NFL should they continue with their current policies.
Remington Research revealed that 51 percent of respondents reported watching “less football” this year compared to previous years. This compared to 19 percent who are watching “more football” and 30 percent who say “about the same.” Of those who say they’re watching less football, one answer far outperformed the rest: 69 percent attributed it to “players using the NFL as a stage for their political views.”
Most Americans want to see NFL players stand in respect during the national anthem and the politicization of football games is turning fans away. Do politics and football mix well?
It’s clear that Americans want NFL players to pay due respect to the national anthem, regardless of whether or not the President addresses the issue. Pollsters asked again, “Do you think NFL players should stand and be respectful during the national anthem?” — this time, without mentioning Trump. A total of 64 percent said “yes.” Only 24 percent replied “no,” and 12 percent were unsure.
Finally, Americans apparently tune in to football games to get away from politics–not to have more of it. Of those polled, 60 percent said there are more appropriate places for players to protest. And 80 percent said they want to see less politics during sporting events.
As Christian News Alerts notes, NFL ratings are taking a major hit. This will have a major impact on their advertising revenue. The NFL is falling out of favor with mainstream America–and it’s uncertain whether they will (or even want to) recover.
