Many Democrats who once thought it was a good idea to defy federal law are changing their minds. It’s a good decision for them, as standing against the president and the American people isn’t the best move, especially if they want to keep their political careers alive.
The pressure President Trump has been putting on sanctuary cities has been yielding results. Miami recently renounced its “sanctuary” status and it’s making a difference. It looks like they’ve become too scared to cross the president, according to The Daily Wire.
Faced with the grim prospect of losing nearly half-million dollars in federal funding over its sanctuary status, Miami is now complying with immigration authorities and yielding to federal law–an example that other cities need to start following.
Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez has ordered the county’s jails to begin obeying federal requests to extend the detentions of any criminal undocumented immigrants that are sought by ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies for deportation. In response, he received a letter from the Department of Justice informing him that Miami was no longer in danger of having funds withheld.
As expected, immigration advocates are infuriated that Gimenez decided to comply with federal law after all. Like many politicians realize, the realities of balancing a budget overcome the needs of fulfilling their liberal agenda.
With Miami falling in line under the pressure, Trump will be setting his sights on other sanctuary cities that have opposed federal immigration policies. Recently, Denver has garnered some attention by demanding the immigration agents stop making arrests at the city’s courthouse when undocumented immigrants are scheduled to appear for court hearings, according to a separate story from The Daily Wire.
Even as these incidents become more frequent, ICE Acting Director Thomas D. Homann has said that they are “planning to target sanctuary cities” indiscriminately with the help of 10,000 new agents that have been hired under the Trump administration. With border crossings plummeting nearly 70% since Trump took office, the agency is turning their attention to one of the last bastions of unlawful immigration–cities with “sanctuary” policies.
“In the America I grew up in, cities didn’t shield people who violated the law,” Homann said. “We’re going to enforce the laws on the books without apology…it’s not OK to violate the laws of this country anymore, you’re going to be held accountable.”
Accountability is a word that defenders of these sanctuary policies haven’t heard in a long time–defenders originating under the previous president’s administration. Obama was extremely delinquent in his defense of the border.
The Blaze reported how US Border Patrol agent Hector Garcia accused the Obama administration of “aiding, abetting and facilitating the smuggling of illegal aliens across the border.” Garcia also said, “there’s a gag order on US Border Patrol agents in Texas.”
With the border under tighter control than it has been, getting rid of sanctuary cities will be the final step when it comes to unlawful immigration. One of the major reasons people attempted crossings in the first place was the knowlege there was a place in America that shielded them from the law. However, eliminating sanctuary city policies will end that protection, and should help restrain immigrants from attempting the dangerous crossing that has already claimed so many lives.
There is a “new sheriff” in the White House, and he intends to do the job he was elected to do by the American people. It’s just a matter of time before the rest of these cities comply with federal law.
