Anthony Scaramucci has only been White House communications director for a few days and already Obama holdovers are leaking information about him.
An article appeared in Politico revealing his financial disclosure connected to a successful investment venture with which Scaramucci was involved. The leaker should be worried, though, because Scaramucci isn’t putting up with it, tweeting, “In light of the leak of my financial disclosure info which is a felony. I will be contacting the @FBI and the @TheJusticeDept”. (via The Hill)
Scaramucci is looking to be a strong force in the White House. Mere days after his appointment he vowed to root out Obama holdovers and put a stop to the leaks. In an interview with Sean Hannity, he called Washington a “swamp” and “cesspool.” He also stated, “it will be virtually impossible to get rid of every leak, but I think we can take dramatic steps.” (via The Hill)
He explained that he won’t be ruthless with the leakers unless it proves necessary. “I think you have to give people a chance, Sean, give them some level of amnesty to see if they’ll stop and work together. But I will move very quickly if they cannot do that, because I have the president’s authority to do so.” (via The Hill)
With the recent leak of his personal financial information, it seems he’ll have to be ruthless. The Politico report containing the leak revealed a $4.9 million profit Scaramucci received due to his ownership stake in Skybridge Capital, a financial investment firm. The leaked document, a financial disclosure form, was linked in the article and reveals the details of this and other holdings of Scaramucci’s.
Scaramucci unleashed a strong warning on Twitter, which has since been deleted, saying, “In light of the leak of my financial disclosure info which is a felony. I will be contacting @FBI and the @TheJusticeDept. #swamp @Reince45.” (via The Hill)
Some people have misinterpreted the Reince Priebus tag as Scaramucci identifying the source of the leak. He later clarified that he was letting leakers know that senior administration officials were with him to put a stop to the leaks.
The writer of the Politico article responded with her own tweet, claiming the financial disclosure was public information, not a leak, and had a link to the document, “Wow, sorry I slept through all the fun! FWIW Mr @Scaramucci’s Form 278e is publicly available from Exlm. Just ask.” (via Lorraine on Twitter)
Even if it turns out the document was obtained legally through public record, the problem with leaks from the White House to the press is still a grave issue. A report was released by Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) earlier this month detailing the constant flow of classified information out of the White House.
Scaramucci is determined to weed out leakers in the White House. Do you think he is handling it well?
The report revealed that the leaks have been happening on a daily basis and have caused a number of issues. Former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn resigned as a result of a leak and another created a “diplomatic incident” between the U.S. and U.K.
Liberals have been applauding the leaks as useful tools in their efforts to resist Trump. What they don’t realize is that these types of leaks create a massive risk for the United States and potentially expose us to our enemies within and abroad.
Hopefully, with Scaramucci behind the wheel, we can put a stop to these leaks and make the U.S. a little safer.
