The White House is undergoing a major shake up in the three weeks since John Kelly was appointed Chief of Staff. The former Marine General is attempting to bring order to the busy Oval Office.
President Donald Trump’s Chief Strategist, Steve Bannon, announced his departure from the White House late Friday night. The former executive chair to Breitbart News was a late addition to Donald Trump’s election campaign, and he is leaving on good terms. “I want to thank Steve Bannon for his service,” President Trump said on Twitter. “He came to the campaign during my run against Crooked Hillary Clinton – it was great! Thanks S”
CNN reports that Steve Bannon was given the option to resign two weeks ago, and refused to leave, thus forcing White House Chief of Staff, Gen. John Kelly, to fire him.
However, White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, denies this claim. “White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve’s last day. We are grateful for his service and wish him the best,” she said in a statement.
Media figures attempting to make sense of Steve Bannon’s sudden departure are speculating about which direction the White House will move without Bannon.
Bannon is often painted by the media as the source of President Trump’s nationalist policies, and he was one of the primary authors of the travel ban. A CNN political contributor believes that the Trump administration will move to the center without Bannon.
Many of these speculations overestimate the power Steve Bannon held over the Trump administration. President Trump denies that Steve Bannon had a heavy influence on his political strategy. Steve Bannon did not join the Donald Trump presidential campaign until the last three months of the presidential election.
“I had already beaten all the senators and all the governors, and I didn’t know Steve,” said President Trump, referring to the Republican nomination campaign. “I’m my own strategist, and it wasn’t like I was going to change strategies because I was facing crooked Hillary.”
Instead, Steve Bannon was brought on to help President Trump expose the horrors of the Clinton criminal network. As the executive chair to Breitbart News, Steve Bannon was at the heart of one of the leading investigative bodies who were monitoring and exposing Hillary Clinton’s many scandals.
Steve Bannon left the White House to resume his work at Breitbart. Will this be a positive thing for the President?
However, after helping President Trump win the White House, Steve Bannon quickly became more of a distraction than anything. The dishonest media frequently relied on Bannon’s prominent position in the White House to suggest that President Trump was courting the alt-right.
Steve Bannon has already returned to his role as executive chair at Breitbart News, and the busy newsman has already started attending editorial meetings. It is unclear if Breitbart will change their favorable approach to President Trump now that Bannon has been ousted from the White House.
A source in the White House doubts that Bannon will retaliate against President Trump. “That’s not where Steve’s head is at,” the insider said. “He’s been fighting for the exact same things that the President has been fighting for.”
