Trump has been cracking down on illegal immigration. With plans for the southern border wall coming to fruition and the border patrol permitted to do their job for the first time in almost eight years, the current administration is setting its sights on their next target: sanctuary cities.
Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Thomas Homan warned sanctuary cities that ICE is going to enforce immigration law nationwide without hesitation or reservation. “We’re going to enforce the law without apology.” (via Fox News)
While speaking on Fox News, Thomas Homan let the American people know that “sanctuary cities” are going to come under the full scrutiny of the law.
“Illegal immigration is not a victimless crime,” said Homan. “These folks, they contract with criminal organizations, which are the same organizations that smuggle drugs, they smuggle weapons, they smuggle people that want to do harm to this country. We’re talking about drug cartels that are involved in smuggling folks. This is not a victimless crime. There are real consequences; this is a life and death decision that these people make. As far as sanctuary cities go…they’re sending the wrong message to these folks that if you get by the border patrol…if you’re lucky enough to survive, we’re going to help shield you from authorities.” (via Fox News)
This specific message came as a result of a recent Texas tragedy, in which ten illegal immigrants died while being transported across the border due to heatstroke and dehydration in the back of a truck. Conditions were so bad passengers said they would take turns breathing through a hole in the side of the truck.
ICE is doing their best to reduce illegal immigration in the U.S. Do you support them?
Dan Patrick, Lieutenant Governor of Texas, mentioned that the reason these people made such a perilous journey that cost their lives was the promise of living in sanctuary cities. He said in a Facebook post that “sanctuary cities entice people to believe they can come to America and Texas and live outside the law. Sanctuary cities also enable human smugglers and cartels. Today, these people paid a terrible price and demonstrate why we need a secure border and legal immigration reform so we can control who enters our country.” (via Daily Mail)
On January 25, President Trump signed an executive order that cuts off the flow of federal funds to cities that don’t assist federal immigration officials seeking to enforce immigration law. This has been the first sincere effort on the part of the government to combat illegal immigration in a long time, as 66 percent of the 11.2 million illegal immigrants that live in this country have been here for over ten years, a statistic that shows how little the United States government has done to genuinely combat this issue.
With illegal immigrants amounting to only 3.5 percent of U.S. residents, but commiting 22-37 percent of all murders in the nation, the consequences of illegal immigration are clear for everyone to behold. As our president takes measures to secure our border and better screen the immigrants coming into our country, sanctuary cities need to be held accountable for the role they have played in this issue.
