News of sexual harassment allegations is nothing new for politics or Hollywood as of late. However, the latest Democrat to face sexual misconduct-related charges just learned some shocking news.
Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), learned that he might not have a choice but to step down after the allegations of his sexual misconduct. A fellow congressional Democrat is calling for Rep. Conyers to step down from his position, and even his hometown newspaper wants him to do the right thing and resign, according to Politico.
Rep. Conyers is accused of firing an employee who repeatedly rejecting his advances. The woman that he harassed reportedly received a payout from the Congressman following her termination.
Fox News reported that the payout given to the employee consisted of taxpayer dollars, an act that should be condemned from both sides of the political aisle. The Congressman is learning the hard way that this kind of behavior is intolerable.
The first Congressman to call for Rep. Conyers to step down was Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY). She stated that Conyers needed to resign right away and that what he has done is “repulsive.”
“Rep. John Conyers should resign. I’ve reviewed the allegations against him, and they’re as credible as they are repulsive,” Rep. Rice wrote in her statement.”Whether it happened 40 years ago or last week, settlement or no settlement, Democrat or Republican — harassment is harassment, assault is assault.”
Rice is not the only Democrat to speak out against Rep. Conyers. Both Reps. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), and Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), said that Mr. Conyers should give-up his spot as a ranking Democrat on the Judiciary panel. However, they did not call for his complete resignation from Congress.
Meeks does not believe it would be “appropriate” for Mr. Conyers to be part of the panel while there is a congressional investigation into multiple sexual harassment claims against him. Rep. Grijalva said, during an interview, that she believes the Congressman should step down.
The House Ethics Committee commented on the situation Tuesday. They reported that they would open an investigation into Rep. Conyers to determine if there is any truth to the claims. This situation is especially hard for Democrats because Mr. Conyers is the longest-serving member in the House.
While all this is going on, The Detroit Free Press, a newspaper from Rep. Conyers’ home city, called for the Congressman to step down. They wrote a piece criticizing Mr. Conyers for the allegations against him.
US Rep. John Conyers is the latest elected official to face allegations of sexual misconduct. Should Mr. Conyers heed the calls from his fellow Democrats to relinquish his positions in the House?
They noted that Mr. Conyers’ actions are “the kind of behavior that can never be tolerated in a public official, much less an elected representative of the people.”
Rep. Conyers admitted to paying the employee a sum of $27,000. However, he denied that the payments had anything to do with her claim.
Sexual harassment and assault crimes are indeed on the rise. As time goes on more members are being exposed. If this should teach government officials anything, it is that their popularity, political party, or length of political career don’t matter — sexual harassment and assault is never acceptable.
