Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters dies at 50

The New York Post reports that Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has passed away prematurely at the age of only 50.

Hawkins was found on Friday dead in the hotel room he was staying at in the Four Seasons Casa Medina located in Bogota, Columbia. He and the Foo Fighters were there on tour.

The Bogota Secretary of Health released a statement on Saturday, saying:

The Emergency Center received a report about a patient with pain in the chest in a hotel in the north of the city. However, when the teams from the Secretary of Health arrive[d], they found another emergency responder from the company EMI. The health care professional who attended to the emergency said that he performed all re-animation maneuvers but he did not receive a response and the patient was declared dead.

What happened?

Initial reports from Columbia suggested that drugs may have played a role in Hawkins’s death.

Journalist Carlos Velez tweeted on Saturday that, in Hawkins’s hotel room, “Colombian authorities found: marijuana, antidepressants, opioids, heroin [sic]. At least 10 different substances found.” Velez, though, has since deleted the tweet.

Whether or not drugs are the cause of Hawkins’s death has yet to be confirmed. But, those close to Hawkins have admitted that drugs may very well have played a role.

Hawkins does have a history of drug use. He, for example, overdosed on heroin in 2001, which sent him into a coma for a week.

An investigation into Hawkins’s death is ongoing.

Hawkins’s final days

Just three days before his passing, on March 22, Hawkins greeted fans outside of his hotel in Asuncion, Paraguay. The fans had gathered there after a performance got canceled due to inclement weather.

There was a touching moment that occurred when a 9-year-old girl, who idolizes Hawkins, brought her drum set, set it up, and began playing outside of Hawkins’s hotel. Hawkins came out and greeted her. The meetup was captured on camera.

Following the news of Hawkins’s passing, the Foo Fighters decided to call off their shows for Friday and Saturday. It is unclear whether more cancellations are forthcoming.

Social media has been flooded with countless tributes to Hawkins.
