Breitbart News reports that over 100 Swedish police officers have been injured in the riots that have been taking place in their country.
The riots broke out last week in response to a demonstration that was set to be put on by Danish anti-Islam politician Rasmus Paludan. Paludan had planned to burn the Qur’an, Islam’s sacred text.
The demonstration by Paludan, the leader of the Stram Kurs party, was supposed to take place on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. But, it never happened.
What did happen were violent riots that lasted for days.
The riots broke out on Thursday in the Skaggetrop region of Linkoping, the Swedish city. The riots would spread to Norrkoping as well as Rinkeby, the Stockholm suburb, and Malmo.
It would appear that Swedish police have borne the brunt of the riots. Some of the rioters even attacked police with rocks and stones. Reports indicate that at least 104 officers have suffered such injuries as bone fractures and even brain damage.
Staffan Brandt, a police and work environment specialist at the Swedish Police Authority’s HR department, said that “there is a large amount of injuries and reports that have been received. This is the worst I have seen.”
Some of the rioters were also injured in the riots, but, according to reports, it is nowhere near the number of police officers injured. Other than this, reports indicate that there has been a large amount of property damage from such things as the burning of cars.
Who’s to blame?
The Swedish National Police suggested that the rioters may not have been ordinary people.
“These are not ordinary counter-protesters,” Swedish National Police Chief Anders Thornberg said. “We have strong suspicions that those who attack police and emergency services are connected to criminal gangs.”
The outlet DW clarifies:
While governments in the Middle East spoke out against the planned Quran burnings, Swedish police said Monday that some protesters who joined the riots and were suspected of being behind the violent flare-ups were actually linked to criminal gangs targeting Swedish police and society, not Paludan and his stunt.
This has yet to be confirmed.
