It’s reassuring to see that there are some people who are willing to still take a knee, not in defiance of the anthem, but for a totally different reason altogether.
As USA Today reported, songwriting legend Stevie Wonder got down on BOTH knees during one of his concerts to do something that the current roster of NFL players should imitate – to pray for our country!
It was a move that stood in defiance as well as in stark contrast to the anti-American sentiments being fanned by the NFL. Ever since Colin Kaepernick inspired a generation of football players to kneel at in protest at the flag and the anthem, rather than stand up in respect to it, it’s set a trend among athletes that has ignited the nation in controversy.
The president has had a few things to say about this behavior.
However, during one of Wonder’s performances at the Global Citizen Festival, the songwriter took a moment to address the audience concerning this controversy.
“Whenever you need to interrupt hate, stand down bigotry, condemn sexism, and find love for all of our global brothers and sisters, everyday,” he said. “Tonight, I’m taking a knee for America,” and as Wonder got down on one knee, he had another thing to say.
“But not just one knee. I’m taking both knees. Both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, our leaders of the world, and our globe,” he said, finishing with a prayer – a move that was met with applause and respect from his audience.
Many problems are facing this nation at the moment, but those who wish to champion the causes of inequality, racism, and sexism shouldn’t be choosing to disrespect the very nation that gave them the freedom to do so in the first place.
“I didn’t come here to preach, but I’m telling you: our spirits must be in the right place,” Wonder said as he knelt with his son Kwame Morris, stressing the importance of being united instead of being divided, as America is at the moment.
Strangely enough, some news outlets are interpreting this move as Wonder siding with the NFL athletes and going against Trump. The Washington Post featured an article titled, “Stevie Wonder joins a movement Trump deplores,” arguing that the musician’s actions mimic Kaepernick’s.
This is far from the case. Trump’s criticism of these NFL players is one shared with millions of Americans who love this country. Those in the league who chose to disrespect the anthem and its nation aren’t encouraging a spirit of unity and co-operation, but rather are encouraging more division within this nation. In this respect, Stevie Wonder and Trump are united – neither want to see this nation divided.
It’s a position shared by many fans of the NFL, whom many are discarding their former associations with the teams they once loved in response to these anti-American behaviors. As seen in one viral video that received almost 200,000 views in just two days, Americans are getting tired of politics intermingling with a sport that they once loved to watch.
