Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ commitment to law and order puts him in sharp contrast to the politically driven policies of many cities across the United States. But he is making an example of one city in particular.
While delivering a statement in Miami-Dade, Attorney General Jeff Session took aim at the sanctuary city policies of Chicago. Sessions praised Miami-Dade for drastically reducing the murder rate while it rises in other major cities like Chicago. “Respect for the rule of law has broken down. In Chicago, their so-called “sanctuary” policies are just one sad example.” Sessions said, “Every year too many Americans lives are victimized as a result of sanctuary city policies whether it be theft, robbery, drugs, assault, battery, and even murder.”
Sessions explained the success story of Miami-Dade police. In the 1980s, Miami-Dade was facing a major drug abuse crisis. Violent crime traveled with drugs to the Florida city, where police would regularly record murder rates around 500 per year.
Through a dedicated police force and a commitment to community police, the murder rate in Miami-Dade is now one-third of what it was in the 1980s. This is particularly remarkable as most major cities are experiencing an increase in crime. The national murder rate was up 11 percent last year.
More than 433 people have been murdered in Chicago since the start of the year. Nearly three times as many people have been murdered in Chicago than Maimi-Dade despite their comparable size. The culprit? Chicago’s sanctuary city policies.
“Here’s how it works right now,” Sessions said. “After the police arrest an illegal alien and charge him with a crime, they fingerprint and book him into their jail. When federal immigration authorities learn that this criminal alien is in Chicago’s custody, they can issue an arrest warrant and ask the city to either notify them before the criminal is released or to transfer him to federal custody. But Chicago’s leaders have made this a political issue and direct their police to refuse both requests.”
As a result, Sessions continued, many dangerous repeat offenders are released “without regard to the seriousness of the crime or how long the rap sheet.” Of course, it is not the Democrat leaders of Chicago who suffer at the hands of their dangerous politically correct policies–it is average Americans.
Repeat offenders and international gangs like MS-13 and the Latin Kings are sheltered by sanctuary city policies. The obvious result is an increase in crime and attacks against vulnerable communities.
Sessions made it clear that politicians–not local police–are the problem. All police are committed to keeping dangerous criminals off the streets, but it is the ideological focus of Chicago officials that allow crime rates to climb each year.
Sessions plans to rescind federal grant funding from cities that refuse to follow the law. For the people in Chicago who are troubled by the lack of federal funds, Sessions says: call your mayor.
“This state of lawlessness allows gangs to smuggle guns, drugs, and even humans, across borders and around cities and communities.” Sessions said. “Sanctuary jurisdictions provide safe harbor for some of the most dangerous criminals in our country.”
As Chicago’s ideological politicians claim victory against what they see as an anti-immigrant Trump agenda, the blood runs in the streets of Chicago.
