If there is one thing Jeff Sessions has been known for throughout his career as a senator from Alabama, it has been standing up against illegal immigration and securing the border. Now, as head of the Justice Department, he is cracking down on sanctuary cities and the Democrats who support them.
Sessions is shutting down grant funding for cities that don’t cooperate with federal immigration officials. “From now on, the Department will only provide Byrne JAG grants to cities and states that comply with federal law, allow federal immigration access to detention facilities, and provide 48 hours’ notice before they release an illegal alien wanted by federal authorities,” Sessions stated. “So-called ‘sanctuary’ policies make all of us less safe because they intentionally undermine our laws and protect illegal aliens who have committed crimes,” said Sessions in a DOJ statement. “These policies also encourage illegal immigration and even human trafficking by perpetuating the lie that in certain cities, illegal aliens can live outside the law.” (via CBS News)
Sessions brought up the recent deaths of 10 illegal immigrants in San Antonio, where immigrants were being smuggled across the border in a truck whose conditions were so bad that they had to take turns breathing through a hole in the wall. Ten people ended up dying due to heatstroke and dehydration.
Sessions’ claim that sanctuary cities have been shielding criminals is entirely true.
The MS-13 gang, originally a Los Angeles street gang of El Salvadorans who fled their country for the U.S., is heavily involved in drug trafficking and other violent crimes. With many of their members being illegal immigrants, the sanctuary cities that shelter these criminals only serve to give them a sense of impunity, and even prevent the DOJ from combating the gang effectively – an argument Sessions made last Friday.
“We are going to dismantle the transnational cartels, drug traffickers and gangs that bring violence and death to communities like Philadelphia. This Department is especially focused on eradicating the threat posed by MS-13. Their motto is ‘kill, rape, control,’ and that is what they do every day.” (via Department Of Justice)
Attorney General Sessions claims that sanctuary cities harbor criminals. Do you agree with him?
Despite this reality, many have fought against Sessions’ efforts, including a federal judge who temporarily blocked the Trump administration from withholding funding over sanctuary city policies. In the past, sanctuary cities refused to hold people at the behest of ICE agents without a warrant from a judge, something that only helps convicted criminals evade deportation.
But with these policies in place, sanctuary cities will be hard-pressed to continue their old policies. “Sessions just did America a great service,” said Bob Dane, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform. “And he did a huge favor for Donald Trump by helping take a first step toward delivering on one of his campaign promises on sanctuary cities. Time to bury the hatchet.” (via New York Times)
Hopefully the Justice Department will succeed in eliminating sanctuary city policies in the United States and in return, crime rates will drop as more illegal immigrants are sent back to their home countries, never to bother U.S. citizens again.
