Following the terrorist attack in New York City this week, there are many people concerned about national security. The question that keeps getting brought up is how this could have been prevented.
The attack occurred when 29-year-old Sayfullo Habubullaevic Saipov drove his rented truck into a crowd of people. As a result, eight people died, and a dozen others were hospitalized. Authorities have said that Saipov came into the United States back in 2010 from Uzbekistan under the Diversity Visa Program, which is a lottery program for countries that don’t have many immigrants here during a period of time. This bill, as noted by President Donald Trump, was supported by Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and many others, according to NBC News.
President Trump took to Twitter to express his outrage over the Diversity Visa Lottery Program. In the tweet referenced Chuck Schumer as being partially responsible for the program being in place.
“The terrorist came into our country through what is called the “Diversity Visa Lottery Program,” a Chuck Schumer beauty. I want merit based,” President Trump’s first tweet in a series of two reads.
The president’s second tweet states, “We are fighting hard for Merit Based immigration, no more Democrat Lottery Systems. We must get MUCH tougher (and smarter). @foxandfriends.”
President Trump later had a cabinet meeting where he said that he plans on working to end the visa program. He stated that effective today, the process of ending the lottery program is underway.
If the President wants to get rid of the lottery system for good, he will have to go through Congress. When describing the program, President Trump stated, “Diversity lottery — sounds nice, it’s not nice. It’s not good. It hasn’t been good.”
The difference cited by Trump for the end of the lottery system is that he believes, “to help our country, we want people that are going to keep our country safe.” The threat is that if people come in via a lottery system, there is no way of telling if they are going to be a right “fit” for the United States.
After President Trump fired at Chuck Schumer for supporting the original lottery program, Schumer fired back on Twitter. Schumer accused the President of politicizing the terrorist attack.
He went on to say that the President is “dividing America” and accused Trump of cutting funds that are “vital anti-terrorism funding.” Yet, all the while, Schumer is accusing President Trump of politicizing the situation.
Chuck Schumer supported the Diversity Visa Program the terrorist in NYC came to the US on. Should the program be ended?
Schumer then went on to compare President Trump to former-President George Bush in the way he handled 9/11. Despite all other claims, Schumer is worried about the victims who died thanks to a law that he originally endorsed when it was voted on and implemented.
This back and forth spat will continue as time goes on. Before all else, the original goal of stopping to the visa lottery system and securing the borders should be front and center. Only time will tell how quickly this bill is handled when it is put in front of Congress.
