This week, the Trump administration made headlines by their move to bar the U.S. military from further accepting transgender recruits. Amid all of the gnashing of teeth, one Christian leader come forward to support President Trump’s ban.
Reverend Dr. James Dobson, who is also a radio host and a psychologist, released a statement praising President Trump for putting generals ahead of politics. Dr. Dobson further rebuked President Obama’s legacy of using the “destructive forces of political correctness and identity politics” in our armed forces (via WND).
Reverend Dr. Dobson was not alone in his support for President Trump’s new directive. The president of the Family Research Council, Tony Perkins, issued a similar statement applauding Trump for forgoing “social experimentation” in favor of focusing on military preparedness and skill.
Breitbart author and noted climate change skeptic James Delingpole also wrote in favor of President Trump’s transgender recruiting ban by hailing the ruling as an attempt to defend Western Civilization in the face of Late Roman Empire-style rot.
The primary issue with transgender serving in the military concerns their predilection towards suicide and suicidal thoughts.
While some have articulated their criticisms of the transgender policy by pointing out that transgender service members cost the taxpayer about $130,000 per individual, plus millions in increased health care benefits, such an argument does not hold water when considering the Pentagon’s history of monumental waste.
Rather, the fact that sixty-percent of transgender individuals suffer from other mental health conditions, is reason enough to put a pause on their recruitment.
Similarly, the transgender population attempts suicide at rates higher than the non-transgender population. Studies show that about forty-percent of all transgender people have attempted suicide at some point in their lives.
The current state of the U.S. military is reason enough to support President Trump’s transgender service ban. Given their high suicide rates, it is a reasonable assumption to think that the stresses of combat and deployments could further increase suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts.
Currently, the Veterans Administration believes that as many as twenty American veterans commit suicide per day. This is a national health crisis that America still has not properly dealt with, nor has our country properly addressed the issue of the VA’s appalling service to our veterans.
Another major issue is the role of women in combat. Under the Obama administration, the military began accepting female Marines as combat leaders and placing women in the Army’s prestigious Ranger School. Despite all promises to the contrary, this movement to include women in combat positions has decreased physical fitness standards.
Such a decrease could adversely impact America’s combat readiness. In the field, our military has to be sure that everyone can carry large burdens for extended periods of time. Women soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines have consistently shown that they cannot replace men when it comes to strength and endurance.
Reverend Dr. Dobson’s words are sound. The American military should be about winning wars and furthering America’s foreign policy goals. Social engineering and social experimentation are not military values. Furthermore, the American military already has a problem with liberal social engineering — adding more transgender troops would only exacerbate the problem.
At Christian News Alerts, we reject bigotry of all kinds. Transgender individuals are to be loved like everyone else made in the image of God. We are a compassionate people. But the military is not a place to be having a social discussion — not when troops’ lives and our national security are at stake.
