It appears that the injuries Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) sustained during an attack on Friday were more serious than initially reported.
According to AP News, Sen. Paul could be in pain for weeks–if not months–due to the damage he’s sustained. Senior Adviser Doug Stafford said Paul is suffering from five broken ribs with at least three displaced fractures.
Fox News reports that Sen. Paul was mowing his front lawn on Friday when his irate neighbor, Rene Boucher, suddenly attacked him. Details of the attack or even what sparked the violence is unclear.
Boucher was charged with a count of fourth-degree assault and taken to the Warren County Detention Center with a bail of $5,000. If found guilty of a Class A misdemeanor he could face up to a year in prison, though Warren County Attorney Amy Milliken, says additional charges could be pursued.
Surprisingly, the severity of Sen. Paul’s injuries was either not known or downplayed by initial reports. Spokeswoman for Paul, Kelsey Cooper, told reporters of the Hill “Senator Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault. The assailant was arrested and it is now a matter for the police. Senator Paul is fine.”
Yet the latest revelation that he’s suffering from five broken ribs reveals the assault was more aggravated then previously revealed.
It’s not clear what Boucher’s motivations were for attacked Sen. Paul. According to neighbors Sen. Paul and Boucher share a corner on their lots and relations have been tense due to an ongoing feud of an unknown nature.
The Daily Mail reports that Boucher is a voting Democrat and his Facebook page has a number of anti-Trump material. In May, he posted an article claiming President Trump was “bullying” NATO leaders.
It’s still unclear if the assault was for personal differences or if it was politically motivated. In any case, Boucher was released from jail on Saturday after posting a $7,500 bond.
Stafford says they’re unsure when Sen. Paul will return to work given the immense pain he’s in. The broken ribs make it difficult for him to move around and even flying causes further pain. The three displaced fractures could lead to complications that could produce lethal injuries making it understandable that Sen. Paul would remain cautious.
In spite of this Sen. Paul seems to be in high spirits. On Sunday, he issued thanks to all his supporters on Twitter, “Kelley and I appreciate the overwhelming support after Friday’s unfortunate event. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.”
Sen. Rand Paul has suffered broken ribs after being attacked on Friday. Did the attackers political leaning have to do with his motive in attacking the senator?
He also has pinned at the top of his feed a video of the oath he took during the formation of the 115th Congress in early January with the caption, “I took an oath to protect & defend the Constitution. I take that oath seriously & will continue to fight for liberty in the 115th Congress.”
Hopefully, Sen. Paul will have a swift recovery and there won’t be any further complications from his injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Senator and his family during his long and painful recovery.
