In today’s Hollywood culture, it’s fashionable to be a liberal as well as an atheist. As such, whenever an actor comes out to declare their Christian faith, it always gets the attention of those on the Left and in Hollywood.
On Sunday, actor Chris Pratt accepted his “Choice Movie Actor: Sci-Fi” award for his role in the hit film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. What caught people off guard, however, was what he said right after that: “I would not be here with the ease and grace I have in my heart without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
The much-beloved actor, known for his comedic and acting skills, stunned the audience and millions of viewers as he announced his Christian faith in front of many fans at the Teen Choice Awards.
The actor had previously recounted his conversion story in an interview with Vanity Fair. “I was sitting outside a grocery store — we’d convinced someone to go in and buy us beer. This is Maui. And a guy named Henry came up and recognized something in me that needed to be saved. He asked what I was doing that night, and I was honest. I said, ‘My friend’s inside buying me alcohol.’ ‘You going to go party?’ he asked. ‘Yeah.’ ‘Drink and do drugs? Meet girls, fornication?’ I was like, ‘I hope so.’”
He continued, saying that, “I was charmed by this guy, don’t know why. He was an Asian dude, maybe Hawaiian, in his 40s. It should’ve made me nervous but didn’t. I said, ‘Why are you asking?’ He said, ‘Jesus told me to talk to you.’”
“At that moment I was like, I think I have to go with this guy. He took me to church. Over the next few days I surprised my friends by declaring that I was going to change my life,” Pratt concluded.
It stands as another remarkable story in what started his rise from a door-to-door salesman to a famous actor in Hollywood. However, Pratt’s beliefs are ones that many in the industry would find dangerous to voice–lest their careers fall into jeopardy.
Actor Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in the Passion of the Christ film said that his Hollywood career was wrecked after taking the role in Mel Gibson’s movie. “Suddenly I stopped being one of the most popular actors in the industry. Sadly, I hadn’t done anything wrong; I just played Jesus,” he said.
Even conservatives, let alone Christians, face discrimination in Hollywood. According to The Daily Wire, Tim Allen said a few months ago, “You’ve gotta be real careful around here. You get beat up if you don’t believe what everybody believes. This is like ’30s Germany.”
In another case, the famous sitcom actor Kelsey Grammer recounted a case where he was extorted into donating $10,000 to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and other Democrats at the behest of a sitcom director in order to keep his job.
There are stories of conservatives and Christians facing discrimination in Hollywood. Do you believe Christians are shunned in Hollywood?
There are countless stories of conservatives and Christians in Hollywood who have lost jobs, Oscars nominations, or had to keep their views to themselves lest they face the consequences of being blacklisted for their beliefs.
In the face of such problems, actors such as Chris Pratt are setting a remarkable example for others in the industry to follow.
