It looks like yet another Democratic official is embroiled in a scandal.
A staffer for Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS) is facing up to five years in prison for providing false information on a security clearance form. The Washington Free Beacon reports that he did not disclose the fact that he had not paid income taxes.
Isaac Lanier Avant was the chief of staff for Rep. Thompson’s Washington, D.C. office. The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia made this announced last Wednesday.
The Washington Free Beacon reports that Thompson is the highest-ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Homeland Security. Avant was required to fill out the form in order to serve as Thompson’s chief of staff.
According to the Justice Department, Avant did not file his individual tax returns from 2009 through 2013. “Despite earning more than $165,000, Avant failed to timely file his 2009 through 2013 individual tax returns, causing a tax loss of $153,522,” said the Justice Department in a press release. “Avant had no federal income withheld during those years because in May 2005, he caused a form to be filed with his employer that falsely claimed he was exempt from federal income taxes.”
The statement also alleges that the staffer did not have federal taxes withheld from his paycheck until the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) required his employer to begin withholding in 2013. He did not file his tax returns until federal agents interviewed him.
This is obviously indicative of some sort of crime occurring, as Avant clearly only responded once the imposing threat of law enforcement became a reality for him.
Avant was sentenced to 30 days in prison along with incarceration every weekend for a year. He was also ordered to pay $149,962 to the IRS in restitution. It is unknown whether or not Avant is still employed by Rep. Thompson.
This development is the latest in a series of scandals being experienced by prominent officials in the Democratic Party. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Bob Menendez, and Eric Scurlock have all been involved in situations involving corruption and sexual impropriety. It’s not a stretch whatsoever to assume that these scandals are either connected, or failing that, only the tip of the iceberg.
A staffer for Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS) is facing up to five years in prison for providing false information on a security clearance form. Will we ever reach the bottom of corruption in the party?
As time goes on, we learn more and more about the various corruptions of the Democrat party, particularly those who held power during the Obama administration. Now that Trump is in office, things are changing rapidly for those who would seek to disillusion the federal government.
While politicians on both sides of the aisle get involved with corruption, it seems that this has been happening more often on the left lately. Last week, Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct came to light when The New York Times reported that he sexually harassed numerous women in the entertainment industry. While Weinstein is not a politician, he is intimately involved with the Democratic Party, many of whom have called him a friend.
Situations such as these remind us that our leaders are not perfect — and many are severely flawed. Hopefully, the Department of Justice will continue to root out corruption where it exists.
