Last week, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued an open criticism to the GOP for making the decision to “rip away” government funds for gender-transition procedures in the military.
Pelosi stated that the “disgusting” amendment to this year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) “effectively bans these patriotic Americans from serving their country” and “undermines our national security.” (via The Daily Caller)
Excuse me, Mrs. Pelosi? Are you saying that our armed forces can’t perform without this funding?
To be clear, the amendment Pelosi was referring to does not ban anyone from serving their country, nor does it ban military men and women from seeking transitional procedures. It quite simply says that Department of Defense funds are not to be used for them.
Specifically, it states, “Funds available to the Department of Defense may not be used to provide medical treatment (other than mental health treatment) related to gender transition to a person entitled to medical care.”
Pelosi went on to say that “Republicans should be ashamed: instead of protecting the men and women who risk their lives to defend our freedoms, they are fighting to rip away the health care of thousands of brave servicemembers. This cowardly Republican amendment targeting transgender men and women in uniform effectively bans these patriotic Americans from serving their country. This disgusting amendment is unprecedented, unacceptable and undermines our national security.”
Her statement seems to suggest that without these treatments and procedures, our patriotic soldiers are unable to perform their duties. The last I checked, Mrs. Pelosi, social politics don’t fight wars. Instead, as Representative Vicky Hartzler stated (R-MO), who presented the amendment, stated, “Military service is a privilege, not a right. It is predicated on winning wars and defeating the enemy. All decisions on personnel and funding should be made with this in mind.”
The entire amendment is based on this premise: “We must have soldiers who can deploy if called upon,” Hartzler stated. “Military members undergoing transition surgery are non-deployable for up to 267 days. Similarly, regular hormone treatments renders individuals non-deployable into the future. It makes no sense to create soldiers who are unable to fight and win our nation’s wars and unfair to non-transitioning individuals who must leave their families and deploy in their place” (via CBN).
The amendment in question was to attempt to reduce military spending because it would break the budget by nearly $30 billion.
Among the protestors of the amendment were Matt Thorn, executive director of OutServe. Thorn said, “We unequivocally condemn Hartzler’s attempt at this amendment. This amendment is a mean-spirited, unconstitutional attempt to impede the recruitment of openly transgender individuals who want to serve their country.”
It’s time for the U.S. to focus government spending on the essential healthcare needs of our troops and on preparing them for battle against ISIS and — not on the agenda of left-wing activists looking to further their own stances. The amendment isn’t “disgusting” at all, Mrs. Pelosi, but an attempt to priority taxpayers funds on essential functions of government. Pelosi would be wise to stop using our military as a scapegoat whenever she doesn’t get her way.
