It’s refreshing to hear a voice of reason in the sea of commentary regarding the recent Las Vegas shooting Sunday. As anti-Second Amendment elements continue their assault on this constitutional right, one conservative legend has something to say.
“This is the price of freedom,” said Bill O’Reilly on the topic of the recent shooting. “Violent nuts are allowed to roam free until they do damage, no matter how threatening they are. The Second Amendment is clear that Americans have a right to arm themselves for protection. Even the loons,” according to Newsmax.
With at least 59 people dead and another 527 injured in the largest mass shooting in US history, the entire nation is recoiling from the shock. However, as those on the Left jumped on the opportunity to attack the Second Amendment, Bill O’Reilly spoke on the topic, including on the idea of new government restrictions on weapons.
“They will find a way,” he said, pointing out that those with violent intentions will always have access to firearms. “Public safety demands logical gun laws, but the issue is so polarizing and emotional that little will be accomplished as there is no common ground.”
He also said that “The murderer had a number of deadly weapons in his room and you can count on the gun control debate to ramp up,” on his blog. “But having covered scores of gun-related crimes over the years. I can tell you that government restrictions will not stop psychopaths from harming people.”
O’Reilly isn’t the first person to call out gun-control laws as not having a real impact on gun crime. Conservative academic Thomas Sowell often called out the Left on this fact. “If gun control zealots had any respect for facts, they would have discovered this long ago, because there have been too many factual studies over the years to leave any serious doubt about gun control laws being not merely futile but counterproductive,” he wrote.
Many Democrats have been clamoring for Congress to do something about gun control, bringing up past mass shootings such as the Orlando nightclub massacre last year which claimed the lives of 49 people. Senator Christ Murphy (D-CT), in particular telling Congress they need to “get off its ass and do something,” according to The Hill.
“Nowhere but America do horrific large-scale mass shootings happen with this degree of regularity. This must stop. It is positively infuriating that my colleagues in Congress are so afraid of the gun industry that they pretend there aren’t public policy response to this epidemic,” Murphy added.
Even Hillary Clinton seized the opportunity to champion an anti-gun cause, blaming the NRA and attacking them. It’s in stark contrast to Trump’s message, which was one of solidarity and unity – a message that all Americans across the political aisle can respect.
On the Las Vegas incident, Bill O’Reilly said, “This is the price of freedom.” Do you agree?
“There’s a time and place for a political debate, but now is the time to unite as a country,” said White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. She continued by mentioning that “it would premature of us to discuss policy” until all the facts of the shooting have come to light.
There is no end to people willing to capitalize on a tragedy to further their political objectives. Sadly, every time someone opens fire on a crowd, liberals will herald this as a new sign that we need to restrict our rights to defend ourselves.
It doesn’t matter that millions of gun owners are responsible and peaceful, all firearms will be seen as a threat in their eyes. Unfortunately for them, however, that’s not what this nation, its Constitution, and a free country are truly about.
