Democrats have fiercely opposed President Trump on his efforts to crack down on sanctuary cities and illegal immigration.
A video on Facebook shows the glaring hypocrisy of Democrats attacking Trump on immigration when they were once strongly opposed to immigration themselves. The video shows then Senator Obama advocating a secure border and punishing employers of illegal immigrants.
In the video, Obama talks about “the need to better secure the border and to punish employers who choose to hire illegal immigrants.” He also cited illegal immigrants and those who employ them as “disrespecting the rule of law” and “showing disregard for those who follow the law.”
In a strong statement that would have many liberals balking, he said: “We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, unchecked, and circumventing the line of people who are waiting patiently, diligently, and lawfully to become immigrants.”
The video is not the only evidence of Obama’s strong opinions on anti-immigration. According to The Daily Caller, his 2006 autobiography before becoming president stated that illegal immigrants threatened the economy.
He undeniably claimed that the influx of young illegal immigrants “threatens to depress further the wages of blue-collar Americans and put strains on an already overburdened safety net.”
This comment would surprise anyone who listened to Obama over the weekend when he strongly criticized Trump removing his DACA program and argued that young illegal immigrants do not affect the economy. “Kicking them out won’t lower the unemployment rate or lighten anyone’s taxes or raise anybody’s wages,” he said, according to Breitbart.
Obama is not alone in the glaring hypocrisy. According to The Boston Globe, in 2006 the majority of Democrats were pushing for the Secure Fence Act that would establish a fence along the US-Mexico border. Shocking, given their recent criticisms of Trump’s wall when it is only taking the idea one step further.
The bizarre turnabout on immigration is explained by Newsmax, who notes Democrats will take whatever stance on illegal immigration that will grant them the most votes. In 2014, Latino voters criticized Obama for withholding an Executive Order for immigration reform until after the midterm elections were over. Some top Democrats claimed to have pressured him into waiting to avoid losing control of the Senate if the ruling proved too controversial.
Christina Jimenez, then director of United We Dream–an advocacy group for young illegal immigrants or ‘dreamers’–criticized the decision. “To wait nine more weeks means that I must again look my mother in the eye and see the fear she has about living under the threat of deportation every day.”
She vowed young illegal immigrants wouldn’t forget the betrayal and duplicity, “But Dreamers will not soon forget the president and Democrats’ latest failure and their attempts to fool the Latino community, and we remain resolute in fighting for justice for our families.”
Historically, Democrats have stood in support of comprehensive immigration reform and securing the border. Have Democrats abandoned the quest for a secure border for political purposes?
It would appear then that Democrats have recently been in favor of illegal immigration because they believe it will get them more votes in future elections. Siding with Trump on illegal immigration crackdowns would undoubtedly result in political suicide, so Democrats are sidling up with the illegal immigrant community in the hope of gaining more votes for their apparent humanitarianism and opposition to Trump.
It will be interesting to see if they would once again flip on the issue if advocating for illegal immigration no longer proves to be beneficial for their political careers.
