In May, Robert Mueller was assigned the task of determining the truth of the allegations that President Trump colluded with Russia.
Since then, Mueller has failed to find a shred of evidence that even hints that collusion occurred. According to The Hill, Mueller has expanded the scope of his investigation beyond anything Russia related to include Trump’s finances; it seems he’s just out for dirt now.
Mueller’s investigation is coming up short and he and his team are starting to get desperate. The claim now is that Mueller is seeking to investigate Trump’s finances to find anything potentially linking Trump with the Russians.
According to Bloomberg, Mueller is looking specifically into a number of Russian-based business dealings. One is Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, obtaining funds for some real estate properties. Another is Trump overseeing the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. Also of interest is a SoHo development with Russian associates, and Trump selling a Florida mansion to a Russian oligarch in 2008.
John Dowd, a lawyer working for Trump, criticized the expansion of Mueller’s investigation in an email. “Those transactions are in my view well beyond the mandate of the Special counsel; are unrelated to the election of 2016 or any alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia and most importantly, are well beyond any Statute of Limitation imposed by the United States code.”
Yet liberals point to the Justice Department’s order claiming Trump’s finances still fall under purview: “[A]ny links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign… and any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”
Liberals believe this means Mueller can expand the investigation into whatever avenue he deems necessary to find anything that could potentially prove their claims. With this broad interpretation, Mueller’s investigation could morph into one completely unrelated to the Russia collusion allegations and could continue indefinitely.
This was a concern voiced by Newt Gingrich, according to Media Matters. In an interview with Sean Hannity, Gingrich said, “I think it’s very reasonable to say this is a very dangerous witch hunt. That Mueller keeps expanding it because he can’t find anything in the original charge.”
He also voiced the warning that Mueller and his team won’t stop until they find something. “He’s not going to find anything about Trump and Russia, and yet he’s hired all of these guys who have given up their very expensive law services to come out and try to get somebody and they’re going to eventually find somebody to prosecute because there are too many lawyers being paid too much money for them to go home having accomplished nothing,” Gingrich said.
Since his appointment as Special Counsel, Robert Mueller has steadily stacked the deck against President Trump. Do you believe Mueller has expanded his investigation beyond his authority?
While President Trump has been very critical of Mueller’s investigation, he hasn’t taken steps to fire Mueller or interfere in any way. According to CNN, Trump blamed bitter Democrats for starting the investigation. “The Russian story is a total fabrication; it is just an excuse for the greatest loss in the history of American politics. That’s all it is.”
It will be interesting to see into what other areas the Mueller investigation expands. Most likely the best they will be able to muster is to portray Trump in a bad light, even though it probably will have nothing to do with the Russians, the election, or any potential collusion.
