Recently, MSNBC anchors Brian Williams and Andrea Mitchell claimed to be completely clueless as to the meaning of President Trump’s tweet questioning Democrats’ double standards.
The two prominent MSNBC anchors made blatant jabs at Trump for his referral to Clinton’s campaign and their collusion with foreign officials during the 2016 election. Williams read the tweet and then asked Mitchell if she could “help [him] decipher” it. Mitchell responded that it was “hard to figure out” what it was about. They both appeared puzzled as they went overboard to question the tweet with statements like “you wanna take a whack at that?” (via NewsBusters)
The tweet they were referring to was one he made in obvious response to the accusations of his son’s ties to Russia and the now-infamous Trump Jr. meeting with a Russian lawyer. Trump was assumably pointing to the Politico report published several months ago, which uncovered a Ukrainian and DNC collusion to research Trump in order to hurt his campaign.
His tweet read: “Why aren’t the same standards placed on the Democrats. Look what Hillary Clinton may have gotten away with. Disgraceful!”
In the report, Politico revealed that ex-DNC operative Alexandra Chalupa had been appointed to dig up damaging information on Trump in order to hurt his campaign and boost Clinton’s. It’s said that she worked with the Ukrainian government to find information that would smear Trump’s name. She then shared her information with the Clinton campaign and the DNC.
The exchange between the two MSNBC hosts about the matter played out like a well-scripted play. Williams sounded baffled, and Mitchell, sounding equally bewildered, bantered back and forth about the possible meaning, with Williams stating that “Earlier he called it a witch-hunt, so he’s still on the fake news or what the Democrats are doing, that combo.” She went on to make some suggestions as to what he could be referring, “Perhaps this is a reference to e-mails, since his son voluntarily tweeted out a whole e-mail chain. Nobody was forcing him to do that other than the questions that were raised by The New York Times, and they said they were about to reveal them themselves. So, he voluntarily released his e-mails, so perhaps it’s an e-mail reference. But it’s hard to figure out what this is about.”
Williams responded to the audience, “Let the record show Andrea Mitchell is always game for a challenge, though sometimes the material leaves us with more questions than answers.”
Their attempt at humorous banter appeared to be a thinly-veiled attempt to draw attention away from the Politico report and the truth. In the mockery, the two joined the rest of the liberal media and managed to further the blatant hypocrisy that has woven itself through the entire scandal.
I tend to share President Trump’s sentiments, “Why aren’t the same standards placed on the Democrats?” When will the hypocrisy end? Unfortunately, not soon enough — this is politics. And if one thing is consistent about politics, it’s that being hypocritical is almost a given. Sad.
