News of Donna Brazile’s new book has been quite a hot topic since an excerpt was released last week. The excerpt seemed to indicate clear evidence of rigging the Democrat primary election, and has elicited some surprising responses.
On Friday, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was the target of brief mockery on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” panel, after an interview clip was played, during which he claimed that he hadn’t followed the 2016 Democrat primary, so he was unaware of allegations of election-rigging, as reported by The Washington Free Beacon.
The video shows Sen. Schumer sitting down for an interview with Kasie Hunt on MSNBC’s “Kasie DC” during which the exchange took place.
Hunt asked Schumer his thoughts on claims made by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and former interim chair of the DNC, Donna Brazile, that the Democrat primary election was “rigged.”
Schumer replied, “I haven’t read her book. I don’t know the details, so I’m not going to make a judgment on that.”
Hunt followed with, “Do you have any concerns about the DNC’s involvement in the primary in 2016?”
“You know, again, I didn’t follow it,” Schumer said. He then expressed interest in Brazile’s book, even saying he’d like to read it.
Hunt seemed surprised that the senator had not heard of these claims. “Bernie Sanders has never complained about this to you before?” she asked.
“Oh, he’s complained all the time,” Schumer admitted.
A preview of the interview appeared on Morning Joe, and when it ended, the panel erupted into laughter. Co-host Willie Geist seemed visibly surprised and asked Hunt, “Kasie, Senator Schumer didn’t follow the 2016 presidential nominating process?”
Co-host Joe Scarborough was heard off camera exclaiming, “Didn’t follow it? Oh my god!”
Hunt replied, “I was a little taken aback when the Senator said that.”
On Saturday, further details from Brazile’s book were released, including details of how she considered removing Hillary Clinton as the Democrat Party nominee for the 2016 presidential election. Brazile called the Clinton campaign “anemic” and containing “the odor of failure.” Brazile considered “a dozen combinations” before settling on then-Vice President Biden as a replacement for Clinton.
Ultimately, Brazile admitted she could not go through with the replacement due to women’s pride and excitement over Clinton.
These recent details, and Brazile’s first excerpt claiming election-rigging, have startled Democrats. Former DNC chairman, Governor Ed Rendell (D-PA), stated: “The timing couldn’t have been worse. It does us no good to hash out all this stuff. At this point, we should be looking to the future — what’s done is done.”
Senior campaign adviser for Bernie Sanders, Mark Longabaugh, stated, “Donna’s revelations, at least vis-a-vis the DNC and the primary, didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know.”
On Thursday, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Sen. Warren if she believed the DNC was rigged in favor of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election. She responded quickly and simply: “Yes.”
Chuck Schumer said he didn’t keep up with the 2016 Democratic primary and was thus unaware of election rigging allegations. Do you believe him?
Warren further called the biased operations in the party “a real problem” and called for accountability. “But what we’ve got to do as Democrats now is we’ve got to hold this party accountable,” she said.
While it’s unclear what this turmoil in the Democrat Party means for its future, it shows a serious problem when officials are unaware of blatant wrongdoing and misconducts of their own party.
