The Left always seems to be willing to spite its adversaries, no matter how poor in taste some of their efforts may be.
According to CBS News, a librarian at the Cambridgeport Elementary School in Massachusetts is refusing to accept a shipment of children’s book donations sent by the first lady, Melania Trump. It’s terrible when those in the public school system choose politics over what’s best for children.
The school’s librarian, Liz Phipps Soeiro, felt compelled to refuse a donation of Dr. Seuss books sent by the first lady, writing a lengthy editorial on a school blog explaining that, according to her, the school doesn’t need the books.
One school was selected from each state to receive 10 Dr. Seuss books from the first lady for National Read a Book Day. However, Soeiro penned a letter saying that her school already had “plenty of resources” and didn’t need the books.
“I work in a district that has plenty of resources, which contributes directly to ‘excellence,’” wrote the librarian. “My students have access to a school library with over nine thousand volumes and a librarian with a graduate degree in library science.”
She also suggested that Dr. Seuss is, among worse things, “a bit of a cliché.” It’s a tame critique in comparison to some of her other interpretations of Seuss’ work, in which she felt the author’s literature was racist and harmful.
“Another fact that many people are unaware of is that Dr. Seuss’s illustrations are steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes,” she wrote, much to her criticism. It should be noted that Springfield, Massachusetts is the hometown of the famous author.
In response, she was immediately met with criticism for what seems to be a politically motivated decision. Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said in a press release “’One fish – two fish – red fish – blue fish’ – I think her comments ‘stink’ and are ridiculous towards our beloved Dr. Seuss.”
“This teacher needs a reality check. Playing politics over children’s books is ridiculous,” tweeted one commenter. “How rude of this librarian. Her priorities seem way off, esp. for a *librarian,*” tweeted another.
The Cambridgeport Elementary School said that the opinions expressed by their librarian do not reflect the school district or the school itself. Instead, she announced that Soeiro had been “counseled” on proper school policies concerning political activities. They also stated that the librarian “was not authorized to accept or reject donated books on behalf of the school or school district.”
A librarian in Massachusetts refuses to accept a shipment of children’s book donations sent by the first lady, Melania Trump. Is this just plain rude?
In contrast to her depiction of Seuss’s work as a form of “racist” propaganda, Soeiro didn’t seem to mention that Dr. Seuss books were both read by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to children several times during their administration. Obama even said that regarding his “Read Across America” initiative, “Pretty much all the stuff you need to know is in Dr. Seuss,” according to The Washington Free Beacon.
It’s sad to see schoolteachers — who should be making decisions for the best interest of their children — choosing instead to let politics cloud their judgment.
