Recently, statues of historical figures like Robert E. Lee were deemed racist. This slippery slope has led some to believe that even the legendary Dr. Suess was a racist bigot — is this what we have come to?
First Lady Melania Trump took a Massachusetts librarian to task after she rejected ten Dr. Seuss books donated by the FLOTUS. In typical fashion, Melania handled the altercation with class and precision. According to Fox News, a press release from Melania’s office stated that she wanted to “help as many children as she can.” The first lady proved that she does not have time for the snarky results of a politically correct librarian — she was just interested in helping the children by giving them books.
The librarian, Liz Phipps Soeiro, said that she would not accept the Dr. Seuss books because they are racist propaganda. Her explanation left a lot to be desired, as it didn’t cite specific examples, but instead generalized.
Stephanie Grisham, the director of communications for the FLOTUS’ office thought that Soeiro’s refusal was “unfortunate.” The statement was clear, identity politics were ignored, and the situation was addressed from a realistic point of view.
“To turn the gesture of sending young students some books into something divisive is unfortunate, but the First Lady remains committed to her efforts on behalf of children everywhere,” Grisham said.
It is quite divisive on the librarian’s part to deny schoolchildren of reading material because she believes the author of those books is racist. Soeiro didn’t seem to have much to say when Michelle Obama was reading Dr. Seuss to children.
This has nothing to do with Dr. Seuss and everything to do with the first lady. Soeiro is letting her political beliefs interfere with a kind deed from Melania.
To make matters worse, Soerio went on to — essentially — insult the first lady for doing something nice. “I work in a district that has plenty of resources, which contributes directly to ‘excellence,'” Soeiro wrote in her statement. “My students have access to a school library with over nine thousand volumes and a librarian with a graduate degree in library science.”
She then went on to criticize the White House and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for not ensuring that more books are going to “underfunded and underprivileged communities.” You have to wonder whether she bothered to look into any of the data to see where the rest of the books were going.
Keep in mind, when Melania originally sent the Dr. Seuss books, she said, “I wanted to send you a special gift. Dr. Seuss’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go! is a book my son and I have read over and over again, and one that we want to share with all of you.”
She went on to say that, “Please also remember that you are the future of America and that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.” How can Soeria feel good about insulting the first lady after such a caring gesture?
One thing is for sure, the constant stream of calling things and people “racists” is steadily building. This is causing serious complications and now, is depriving kids of the chance to have certain books in their hands.
