President Trump’s youngest son, Barron, receives more media attention than would be expected for an 11-year-old boy. Interestingly, the coverage tends to be for observations others make of the young Trump than for anything he explicitly does.
Barron Trump is now the subject of an intensely critical editorial at The Daily Caller. The writer rebukes Barron for his casual attire, which he considers to be inappropriate for the son of a President. In the author’s judgment, Barron should dress more formally in his public appearances.
The scathing editorial makes particular mention of Barron’s outfit this past Sunday when the Trump family returned to the White House after a brief a stay in New Jersey. Barron was seen accompanying his parents dressed in loafers, shorts, and a red t-shirt with the words “On Your Mark Tiger Shark.”
While the writer claims to generally be a fan of Barron, he does not reserve his dismissal of what he considers to be unpresidential clothing. He even went so far as to say that Barron looked like he was going “on a trip to the movie theater.”
According to the editorial, it is Barron’s duty as the “first son” to dress as elegantly as his parents. “The youngest Trump doesn’t have any responsibilities as the president’s son, but the least he could do is dress the part when he steps out in public.”
The writer compares Barron’s experience growing up in the White House to the childhood of the average American. Most children have to dress up nicely against their will for formal events like church and awards ceremonies. The Daily Caller editorial claims the young Trump is getting away with what normal children could not.
The author of this piece does not note that Barron typically wears a suit when attending public functions with his parents, as seen at News Day. Presumably, like most parents, the Trumps do not feel the need to dress-up an 11-year-old boy in a suit every time he steps out of the house.
While The Daily Caller writer was opposed to Trump’s clothing Sunday evening, others were supportive. The Kansas City Star reports that following photos of Barron in his red “Tiger Shark” t-shirt have gone viral, and Internet users have rushed to buy the same shirt. In fact, many people from outside conservative circles–including Chelsea Clinton–came to the defense of Barron, as reported by Independent Journal Review.
This is far from the first time Barron has come under media scrutiny. As covered by US Magazine, Rosie O’Donnell came under fire last year after she tweeted a video suggesting Barron has autism. After Melania Trump criticized her for making a political target out of a child, O’Donnell apologized and retracted her accusations.
However, Lifezette reports that she again targeted Barron after news host Liz Wheeler tweeted that Barron was disturbed by the infamous Kathy Griffin photo of herself holding a fake-but-realistic decapitated Donald Trump head. According to The Washington Times, famous Jeopardy contestant Ken Jennings also joined in the mocking of the President’s 11-year-old son.
Trump supporters typically view Melania and Barron Trump favorably. Even the President’s detractors generally leave them out of discussions. In fact, as seen at the Inquisitr, the First Lady has become something of a fashion icon, despite her husband’s controversial politics.
It’s also ironic that the Trump-friendly Daily Caller would publish such a critical article on Barron Trump, a non-political target. The news site has not stated whether the piece is satire, although it remains an “entertainment” article on their site.
