Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) is known for being one of the most vocal detractors of President Trump. Since the 2016 election, Waters has made disparaging remarks about the President and his cabinet, and even called for his impeachment.
In a surprising turn of events, the long-time Congresswoman faces a minor scandal related to the use of campaign spending. According to the Washington Free Beacon, Maxine Waters’ campaign wrote off over $10,000 in tickets for the Broadway show Hamilton as a fundraising expense.
Citizens for Waters, a House campaign committee, paid a total of $10,747.15 for tickets to Broadway music Hamilton, which gained notoriety last year for its left-wing casting decisions and for the cast’s remarks to then-Vice President-elect Mike Pence, which President Trump considered an act of harassment.
According to a report of receipts and reimbursements compiled by the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Citizens For Waters paid the $10,000-plus sum on August 26 for a number of seats to the show.
Interestingly, records also show that Citizens for Waters raised $954,948 for Waters’ re-election bid, but spent $1.05 million. Neither Waters nor her staff has responded to press requests for additional information regarding the purchase of Hamilton tickets.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton, has ties to a number of Democrat and left-wing causes. The hit musical tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton and is largely based on the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, as noted by Newsweek.
The musical adaptation of the Alexander Hamilton story is notable for featuring an exclusively non-white cast, as covered by the New York Post. Alexander Hamilton and other founding fathers are portrayed by black men.
The play made headlines when it arrived in New York because of casting calls soliciting only “NON-WHITE men and women.” Only King George III, the British monarch at the time of the American Revolution, is played by a white man.
Waters has made a number of controversial statements regarding President Trump and his administration. As reported by Fox News, Waters in February said of Trump’s cabinet: “I just think the American people had better understand what’s going on. This is a bunch of scumbags. That’s what they are. Who are all organized around making money.”
Waters has also been adamant about impeaching Donald Trump. According to The Daily Caller, she took the opportunity to call for the President’s removal during her eulogy at the funeral for comedian Dick Gregory in September. “And then comes along this person,” Waters said of Trump, “this person who does not respect you. This dishonorable human being who cheats everybody! This dishonorable human being who will lie at the drop of a hat. This dishonorable human being who has the alt-right, and the KKK and everybody else inside his Cabinet!”
Waters was caught misusing taxpayer funds. Should she pay the money back?
“I’m gonna say ‘Impeach 45 everyday,’ ‘Impeach 45 everyday,’ ‘Impeach 45 everyday'” Waters shouted. The anti-Trump rhetoric has made Waters popular with the far-left segment of the Democrat Party.
As the Los Angels Times reports, Waters has come under scrutiny for corruption allegations related to business dealings her family secured through her work in Congress.
The latest revelation about her campaign’s spending on entertainment further brings into question the ethics of the California Congresswoman.
