Tensions are high as President Trump and Kim Jong-un exchanged disturbing warnings and threats after it was discovered North Korea has nuclear-tipped missiles aimed at the United States.
Secretary of Defense James “Mad Dog” Mattis has rolled up his own sleeves and proven to be a strong ally of President Trump’s in facing the hostile threats coming from Kim Jong-un. According to Fox News, the four-star US Marine Corps General issued a chilling statement to North Korea: “The DPRK should cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people.”
The strong words came after US analysts in the intelligence agencies determined that North Korea was capable of creating a miniaturized nuclear warhead to fit on the tip of its intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), as reported by NPR. It was also determined they had ICBMs that would allow North Korea to strike US territories.
Geoff Brumfield, of NPR’s All Things Considered, reported that the frequent tests conducted by Kim are evidence of the existence of the warheads. “They’ve done five nuclear tests now. Other countries have been able to miniaturize in fewer tests, so it seems reasonable to assume that they’ve been able to miniaturize by this point,” Brumfield reported.
Mattis’s chilling warning to North Korea was a follow-up to the spat between Trump and Kim after the existence of the warheads was discovered, as covered by The New York Times.
On Tuesday, Trump threatened the dictator, saying, “North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.”
Kim fired back with his own warning about targeting Guam, saying, “It is a daydream for the US to think that its mainland is an invulnerable Heavenly kingdom. The US should clearly face up to the fact that the ballistic rockets of the Strategic Force of the K.P.A. are now on constant standby, facing the Pacific Ocean, and pay deep attention to their azimuth angle for launch.”
He also vowed that “everything will be reduced to ashes and flames the moment the first attack is unleashed” and promised to “turn Washington, the stronghold of American imperialists and the nest of evil, and its followers, into a sea of fire.”
Mattis was quick to state that diplomacy is obviously the current measure being taken, but the US would be prepared for any attack and subsequent retaliation. “While our State Department is making every effort to resolve this global threat through diplomatic means, it must be noted that the combined allied militaries now possess the most precise, rehearsed and robust defensive and offensive capabilities on Earth,” Mattis said.
The Trump administration has had some tough words for the North Korean leader. Do you agree with the tough stance taken by the administration?
He also warned that any action taken by North Korea would be a fool’s errand: “The DPRK regime’s actions will continue to be grossly overmatched by ours and would lose any arms race or conflict it initiates.”
Trump echoed this sentiment in a tweet he sent out Wednesday: “My first order as President was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal. It is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before….”
Though no one wants war, especially a nuclear exchange, it is comforting to know that the US is prepared defensively and offensively for an attack from North Korea. Americans can be hopeful, however, that this matter will be resolved diplomatically, and peaceful coexistence can be achieved with this hostile nation.
