Gloria Steinem is a self-proclaimed feminist who has been open about her political ideology for years. In a recent interview with Refinery29, she continued that trend with a statement that still has people scratching their heads.
Steinem claimed that the reason climate change is occurring is because women are not getting enough abortions. According to LifeSiteNews, Steinem said, ” If we had not been systematically forcing women to have children they don’t want or can’t care for over the 500-year patriarchy, we wouldn’t have the climate problems that we have.”
The problem with her argument: climate change and abortion are not related at all. Her claim is not based on reality, but on consistently debunked propaganda. Steinem is a proponent of forced population control. She honestly believes that if abortions were to end we would become densely overpopulated and the Earth’s environment would collapse.
Not only is encouraging more abortions not the answer, but the idea of “overpopulation” is a myth that has been soundly disproven. If you bust a simple hole in this idea, the rest of her argument falls apart.
If you read the interview, she never makes a direct link between how overpopulation is going to cause climate change. There is a good reason why she never brings this up — probably because she doesn’t even know how overpopulation would affect the climate. Honestly, no one knows.
There is no denying that the climate does change, but reliable evidence simply does not exist showing that humans cause a majority or even a tangible amount of change in the climate. But radical environmentalism demands absolute conformity, regardless of credible arguments in the other direction.
One of the worst offenders besides Steinem is Bill Nye the Science Guy. At one point, Nye was asked if he thinks that people who deny climate change need to be arrested. He responded, “Was it appropriate to jail the guys from Enron?” We are not sure what Enron has to do with proving a point about climate change, other then Nye just wanting to find a way to jail skeptics.
In Steinem’s interview, she took a similar approach to Nye: attack everyone who doesn’t believe like you do and make extreme generalizations. After touching on how we need to make sure everyone gets abortions to save the environment, she predictably went after religion.
“We should have this massive education campaign pointing out that the Pope and all of the other patriarchal religions that dictate to women in this way,” Steinem smugly stated. It is sad to see her taking pot shots at Christianity based on how it supposedly “dictates” to women, but she failed to mention Islam, which encourages marrying little girls and doesn’t allow women to drive (among other things).
When it comes down to it, there’s an ideology behind modern environmentalism that ties into liberalism as a whole. Far from simply being that we need to care for the planet — which we most certainly should — it demands the total subjugation of people and economies. It is a means to achieving more government control, whether its proponents believe this or not. The end result is clear.
For Steinem’s part, it is troubling to think that she is passing along the message to young girls that having an abortion and rejecting religion will help save the planet. But this is what happens when material things become an idol. We must remember: You always worship something.
