Some liberals have taken their resistance efforts to unsettling extremes with examples including the Scalise shooting, Kathy Griffin holding a mock severed head of our president, and several death threats against senators.
Yesterday, another liberal took to social media to voice his complaints against the president and issue a disturbing request. Kevin Allred, a professor at Montclair State University in New Jersey, sent out a tweet, saying, “I wish someone would just shoot him outright.” (via Fox News)
Kevin Allred is a professor of women’s studies at Montclair State University in New Jersey. He is most known for teaching a “Politicizing Beyonce” class at Rutger’s University that used the career and life of Beyonce to help students understand the works of modern black feminists and those in history.
Over the weekend, Allred unleashed a torrent of unsettling tweets. Most prominent was the following tweet, that has now been deleted, criticizing President Trump and hoping for his death: “Trump is a f***ing joke. This is all a sham. I wish someone would just shoot him outright.” (via Fox News)
Allred is no stranger to violent tweets. In 2016 he sent out a tweet while working at Rutgers University, saying, “will the 2nd amendment be as cool when I buy a gun and start shooting [at] random white people or no….?” (via Kevin Allred Twitter)
This tweet concerned students who reported Allred to campus police who then reported him to local police. Allred was taken to Bellevue Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, according to an NYPD spokesperson. “We were informed by Rutgers PD that he made threats to kill white people and he was subsequently taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.” (via Williamsburg Patch)
He was released after the evaluation and immediately went on social media, launching a stream of tweets voicing his complaints about supposed infringement on his rights, double standards of the establishment, and even that his being taken to Bellevue was proof of Trump cracking down on free speech.
Allred has remained unapologetic for his previous and recent tweets. When faced with understandable concern for wishing the president dead, Allred claims his tweet doesn’t count as a threat. He tweeted, “saying you wish donald trump was dead is different than making a direct threat against him. just saying…” (via Fox News)
Allred says he wants Trump dead. Should the police investigate him?
Though Allred claims his tweet wasn’t a threat, wishing the death of someone else is not acceptable and shows moral depravity. This type of rhetoric also generates a culture of anger that could lead to individuals resorting to violent acts to solve their problems, such as the Scalise shooting when James Hodgkinson shot at Republican senators during a baseball practice.
It’ll be interesting to see if the police take an interest in Allred’s tweets, or if he’ll get away with this type of behavior on technicalities. Considering Kathy Griffin was recently exonerated from her own severed head scandal, it is likely Allred won’t see any criminal charges for his comments.
Though freedom of speech should be protected, inciting others to violence and making light of the death of another human being is not okay. Liberals should be held accountable for their violent rhetoric. In Allred’s case, he should be dismissed from teaching so his toxicity can be removed from the learning experience of the upcoming generations.
