Leaked text messages show private confrontation between Elon Musk and Bill Gates

Leaked text messages reveal a confrontation that took place between billionaires Elon Musk and Bill Gates.

There is a lot about the text messages that remains unknown, such as when they are from and who leaked them. However, their authenticity has been verified by Musk himself.

The confrontation

In the text messages, it appears that Musk and Gates are trying to set up a meeting somewhere. Before they finalize their plans, Musk hit Gates with a question.

“Do you still have a half-billion-dollar short position against Tesla?” Musk asked. For those unfamiliar with the term, shorting is when an investor borrows stock on the premise that its value will decrease profiting the borrower.

Gates replied, “Sorry to say I haven’t closed it out. I would like to discuss philanthropy possibilities.”

Musk then wrote, “Sorry, but I cannot take your philanthropy on climate change seriously when you have a massive short position against Tesla, the company doing the most to solve climate change.”

It’s real

After the text messages were leaked, Musk was asked whether they are real. He replied in the affirmative.

“Yeah, but I didn’t leak it to NYT,” Musk wrote. “They must have got it through friends of friends. I heard from multiple people at TED that Gates still had half-billion short against Tesla, which is why I asked him, so it’s not exactly top secret.”

Musk also posted this tweet:

“Moving on”

On Sunday morning, Musk released another tweet that simply read, “Moving on . . .” A few hours later, he added, “from making fun of Gates for shorting Tesla while claiming to support climate change action.”

Gates has not provided public comment on the situation.

Recently, Musk has been trying to acquire Twitter with an offer of over $40 billion, or $54.20 per share. At first, the company was hostile to Musk’s offer. But, according to the latest reports, it appears that Twitter might be warming up to the offer.
