The ongoing national anthem protests by NFL players started with former quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016.
As reported by Fox News, liberals have decided to grant him an honor, despite the division and controversy he’s caused. GQ magazine has named Colin Kaepernick “citizen of the year” and put him on the cover of their latest issue.
In an article titled, Colin Kaepernick Will Not Be Silenced, GQ tells the story of how Kaepernick became a victim because of his fight against alleged police brutality against blacks: “He’s been vilified by millions and locked out of the NFL—all because he took a knee to protest police brutality. But Colin Kaepernick’s determined stand puts him in rare company in sports history: Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson—athletes who risked everything to make a difference.”
In 2016, Kaepernick sparked a political controversy when he refused to stand during the national anthem before a game. NFL News reported his statement explaining why he did it: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Kaepernick was referencing a number of high-profile shootings in 2016, in which white officers killed black suspects. The Left ran with the narrative that these were racially motivated killings and disingenuously energized the liberal community to protests that led to Kaepernick boycotting the national anthem.
Yet The Daily Wire reported that the evidence simply doesn’t exist to prove white cops are killing blacks for racial reasons. Citing numerous data sources and studies, they disprove the narrative of systemic racially motivated killings by police officers.
One statistic from 2015 shows police officers had used lethal force against twice as many whites than blacks. The Left’s favorite data showing unarmed black men are more likely to die from a cop shooting than white unarmed men, fails to reveal that many of those situations were highly charged moments where the shooting was accidental or part of a fight.
Perhaps most stunning was the FBI data showing that blacks were more likely to kill law enforcement officers then law enforcement officers were to kill blacks. These and many other facts disprove the narrative that “racist cops” were targeting blacks as part of a widespread problem. Nevertheless, the Left continued with their narrative, pointing to many alleged racially motivated shootings that were eventually disproven as racially motivated.
More troublesome than Kaepernick’s activism for a non-existent issue was that he chose to voice his concern by boycotting a symbol that signifies support for the military. The military had nothing to do with the false-narrative issue of “racists cops,” but he chose to disrespect the flag and the national anthem anyway.
Colin Kaepernick was named GQ’s “Citizen of the Year.” Does he deserve this title?
GQ naming Kaepernick “Citizen of the Year” is absurd. Kaepernick was protesting a ceremony meant to respect the military, to raise awareness for an issue that didn’t exist. This has resulted in the depletion of the NFL’s fan base and revenue because players have used the protesting of the national anthem as a catch-all for any activist cause, including a means to resist President Trump. Their actions are also serving to increase the political divide in the nation — a divide that threatens to tear the American people apart.
Kaepernick, it can be argued, is nothing more than a liberal activist receiving praise from the Left for tilting at windmills.
