An infamous terrorist has been indicted for his crimes. If found guilty he could face the death penalty.
According to CBS New York, a federal grand jury has indicted a man guilty of carrying out a terrorist attack in New York. It’s Sayfullo Saipov, the perpetrator behind the Manhattan truck attack, and he may end up on death row for killing eight people in the name of ISIS.
On Halloween, Saipov rented a truck with the intent to kill as many people as he could. He had been planning the attack for nearly a year and was ready to commit the horrible atrocity in a show of support for ISIS.
He drove the rental truck onto a bike path on Houston Street, plowing into pedestrians and cyclists. Saipov’s horrific attack left eight dead and nearly a dozen wounded. His reign of chaos lasted for several blocks, and was stopped when his truck rammed into a school bus. As he exited the truck, he shouted “Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” before removing two items from the truck that many believed were firearms.
Police officers on the scene immediately fired upon Saipov, wounding him and enabling them to take him into custody before he could harm anyone else.
Once in custody, an investigation of the incident found that Saipov had been radicalized by ISIS propaganda. According to officials familiar with the investigation, cellphones were found revealing the depth of his indoctrination and the careful planning taken before the attack.
According to authorities, “Cellphones recovered from the truck contained, among other things, video and images of ISIS propaganda, and internet searches for truck rentals and for Halloween in New York City.”
Reportedly, Saipov wanted to adorn the truck with ISIS flags but felt doing so would draw too much attention and prevent him from carrying out his attack.
Unremorseful, Saipov dismissed his Miranda rights and admitted to the terrorist attack. He said he was inspired by ISIS videos that he’d watched on his phone and had planned to kill many more people by performing another attack on the Brooklyn Bridge.
US Attorney Joon Kim believes the legal proceedings will be an open and shut case: “Like many terrorists before him, Saipov will now face justice in an American court. And like New York City’s response to his alleged attack, we expect that justice, in this case, will be swift, firm, and resolute,”
An article on Lawfuel explains the indictments filed against him in detail, saying he’s been accused of eight counts of murder, 11 counts of attempted murder, attempting to assist a terrorist organization and the destruction of a motor vehicle. All charges add up to a sentence of either life in prison or the death penalty.
By his own admission, Sayfullo Saipov is guilty of committing a terrorist act. Should the death penalty be used in this case?
Considering he’s already pled guilty to the attack, shows no remorse whatsoever, and left plenty of evidence proving his guilt, it’s likely the trial won’t last long. It’s also likely that such a grievous crime will result in the death penalty.
Though there is no punishment severe enough for such a horrific act, at least the families of the eight victims will find solace that the perpetrator will face justice for his crimes. Hopefully, this will also serve as a strong message to other would-be terrorists seeking to associate themselves with ISIS that their horrific intentions will not be tolerated — and will be met with swift justice.
