President Trump previously ordered 20 federal agents to help combat the crime epidemic that is taking place in Chicago following a deadly shooting last weekend. He was right to do so.
Initial reports for the weekend had 46 wounded and 6 dead, however, more violence ensued this past Fourth of July weekend — one of the bloodiest in Chicago’s history, leaving 101 wounded and at least 15 dead. (via CBS News)
Before the holiday weekend, the Chicago Police Department announced they were planning on changing the way they fight gun-related violence, attacking the root of the problem and trying to stem the flow of illegally-purchased firearms. Coupled with a new technology that helps pinpoint gunshots across the city, the police force went into the weekend with a sense of cautious optimism.
Yet after the sheer violence of the weekend, “the mood here is frustration,” said chief spokesperson for the police department, Anthony Guglielmi. “It’s perplexing. We deployed some very successful tactics over the Memorial Day weekend.” (via Time)
Chicago’s homicide rate has been increasing to reach record high levels not seen in decades. Last year 762 people were killed, a 58% increase from the previous year. With more murders than New York City and Los Angeles combined, Chicago’s 27.7 per 100,000 murder rate is the highest the city has seen since the mid-nineties.
This July 4 saw almost four times the number of deaths from last year’s Independence Day, with 60 wounded and four dead. (via USA Today)
Even worse for Chicago’s residents, budget cuts to programs that help identify conflicts before they become violent have been made. All of these things combined is creating tension in the police department as well, as the budget cuts hamper their own ability to fight crime.
Chicago is known as a city with strict gun control laws, yet the irony is lost on many gun-control advocates that the only individuals who abide by these policies are law-abiding citizens. A criminal is going to find and use a weapon whether it is illegal or not, and the vast majority of gun violence taking place in Chicago comes from gangs, not average, law-abiding citizens.
No law or restriction is going to be stopping criminals from trying to acquire firearms, despite what Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says. The mayor believes that implementing new regulations for Federal Firearm License holders (FFL) in Chicago is the solution to the problem. (via Breitbart)
Emanuel would do well to study the works of the brilliant Thomas Sowell, who wrote that “The zealotry of gun control advocates might make some sense if they had any serious evidence that more restrictive gun control laws actually reduce gun crimes. But they seldom even discuss the issue in terms of empirical evidence” (via Creators Syndicate).
“Savings lives is serious business. But claiming to be saving lives and refusing to deal with evidence is a farce,” remarked the Stanford economist. “Gun control zealots are almost always people who are lenient toward criminals, while they are determined to crack down on law-abiding citizens who want to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones.”
Sowell’s words are proven true by the events that unfolded in Chicago this past weekend, and continually on a regular basis in the city. Chicago faces two options: continue with strict gun control and hope that criminals will obey the law, or allow law-abiding citizens their God-given and constitutionally-affirmed right to defend themselves with firearms. Only one option will reduce crime in Chicago and make it a safer place to live.
