White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was tasked with going out to speak to the media about the elimination of the DACA program. As you would imagine, the reporter’s emotions were running high, and Sanders had to lay it on the line for them.
She started with a simple statement, “With all due respect, I don’t think the American people elected Congress to do things that were easy.” Sanders elaborated, “They elected them to make a government that works, to work properly, and to work for the American people, and that’s their job. And if they can’t do it, then they need to get out of the way and let somebody else … who can take on a heavy lift and get things accomplished.”
This statement came directly after they asked Sanders what would happen to the 359 DACA program members who serve in the US Army. Sanders stated that she believes that the White House and Congress should “do their job.”
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was designed to grant amnesty to undocumented immigrant children that were brought here during the Obama era. Now that it is winding down, the tensions are running high as the Trump Administration tries to close it once and for all.
President Trump tweeted his expectations in a simple statement: “Congress, get ready to do your job – DACA!”
The DACA program was started by Obama, unilaterally, without congressional support. President Trump was seeking to get rid of it in similar fashion.
During her press conference, Sanders told reporters that it isn’t going to be easy, but as mentioned, Congress didn’t take this job because it is easy. Their job is it develop and implement immigration reform so that the safety and welfare of the American people are put first.
“This is something that needs to be fixed legislatively, and we have confidence that they’re going to do that, and we stand ready and willing to work with them in order to accomplish responsible immigration reform, and … DACA’s certainly part of that process,” Sanders stated.
It is up to Congress to legislate law in this country, not the President’s job, Sanders clarified. As her final blow, she mentioned that this is something everyone learned in eighth-grade civics. “Every member of Congress knows their duty, and we’re asking them to fulfill it,” Sanders said.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders says if Congress can’t do their job, then somebody else who can do a heavy lift needs to take over. Do you think our current Congress is capable of heavy lifting?
According to Fox News, acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke clarified Tuesday that DACA would be phased out, and “no new initial requests of associated applications filed after today will be acted on.”
As of right now, there are nearly 800,000 undocumented people under the umbrella of the program. The immediate results of the ending of the program are still up in the air.
However, the long term impact is what everyone is looking toward. The program allowed an unlimited amount of undocumented immigrant children. Not only was this a dire strain on the country considering problematic numbers of people who are unemployed or rely on government assistance, but it posed a significant risk to the nation’s security. Hopefully, eliminating DACA will enable the country to focus on making life better for Americans.
