Ever since he first declared his candidacy for president of the United States, Donald Trump has been smeared by the mainstream media. At first they called him a buffoon, then they took to making him into some kind of neo-Hitlerian monster.
Now, Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone has come forward to claim that the media ought to be “ashamed” for its completely biased coverage of President Trump. “The whole idea of a newspaper to me is to ‘give me the facts,'” Langone said before adding, “The New York Times’ front page is the equivalent of an editorial now” (via Breitbart).
Langone wound up his criticism of the media by praising President Trump’s economic policies, specifically his calls to de-regulate certain aspects of the American economy.
As for the media’s response to Donald Trump’s economic policies, they have been predictably two-faced. On the one hand, The Washington Post, which is notable for its anti-Trump bias, recorded that June saw a massive surge in job growth. On the other hand, FiveThirtyEight, which routinely predicted that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency, has cast aside this job growth as nothing unfamiliar from the Obama years.
A Washington Post analyst echoed FiveThirtyEight‘s summation, thus disagreeing with his paper’s own reporting.
Unlike President Obama, President Trump is held to an impossible standard by the very same media that constantly tries to paint him as a “racist” and “sexist” demagogue. However, even the mainstream media cannot hide that consumer confidence has soared under President Trump.
Mr. Langone’s comment remains true that the mainstream media has forgone its traditional role of truth-teller in order to advocate for politicians and causes that they support. In her new book The Smear, investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson argues that journalists, who mostly align with the political left, have been co-opted by shady advocacy firms that successfully pass off their partisan activists as real journalists.
In the eyes of many, the Trump presidency has finally and conclusively proven that the American mainstream media is rotten with bias. Project Veritas has even exposed some high-level members at CNN as anti-American bigots.
American journalism needs decades to undue the damage to its reputation that it suffered in the last two years. All of these wounds, which are self-inflicted, have left open the gates for a new, alternative media that is flowering.
These days, more and more Americans agree with Mr. Langone and have turned off the TV and trashed their newspapers. Instead, people are turning to the booming industry of online news, where the freedom still exists to actually report the truth, engage in the marketplace of ideas, and hold the powerful accountable.
In fact, if it wasn’t for the internet, Trump wouldn’t have been elected president. He successfully co-opted the mainstream media and took his message straight to the people. As Mr. Langone has pointed out, however — even though Trump has been successful — the media still won’t give Trump a fair shot. It’s become too blatant to ignore.
