Hillary Clinton continues to court the limelight, wading into fraught political waters after losing her 2008 and 2016 presidential bids.
While touring the world to promote her memoir What Happened, failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton defended NFL players who kneel in protest during the national anthem. “Actually, kneeling is a reverent position,” Clinton said, claiming that NFL players are actually displaying deep respect towards the flag by kneeling during the national anthem, as reported by Fox News.
Speaking at the Southbank Centre’s London Literature Festival, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Democrats to “resist” President Trump by supporting protesting NFL players. “I think it would be a grave error for Democrats to recede from those fights, so, therefore, we have to stand up, fight back, resist,” She said.
Former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick launched a series of national anthem protests at the start of the 2016 NFL season. Kaepernick became a free agent at the end of the 2016 season, and he has yet to be signed to a new team.
While few players joined Kaepernick in protest during the 2016 season, inflammatory comments issued by President Trump in September have encouraged players to protest in support of Colin Kaepernick.
While appearing at a campaign rally in Huntsville, Alabama, President Trump referred to “son of a b—-” anthem protestors, adding that he would fire any player who kneeled during the national anthem if he was a franchise owner, as reported by Deadspin.
Since the start of his national anthem protests, Colin Kaepernick has maintained that he is protesting supposed police brutality and systematic racism against black Americans, and his kneeling is not a protest of the American flag nor the national anthem.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders poked holes in Colin Kaepernick’s explanation at a press conference shortly after President Trump’s Alabama rally. “I think if the debate is really, for them, about police brutality, they should probably protest the officers on the field that are protecting them instead of the American flag,” Sanders said.
Clarifying her statement, Sanders added, “I was kind of pointing out the hypocrisy of the fact that if the goal is and the message is that of police brutality, which they’ve stated, it doesn’t seem very appropriate to protest the American flag. I’m not sure how those two things would be combined.’
However, Hillary Clinton does not doubt the sincerity of Kaepernick’s comments, and she told a crowd at the London Literature Festival that these protests are “not against our anthem or our flag.” Instead, Clinton suggests that kneeling during the national anthem is a way for NFL players to resist President Trump.
Hillary Clinton claims kneeling is a reverent position of protesting. Do you agree?
“That’s what black athletes kneeling was all about,” Clinton said, referring to President Trump’s comments as a “very clear dog-whistles” to his racist base.
Essentially, Hillary Clinton is suggesting that President Trump and his supporters are racist for expecting millionaire NFL players to stand at attention with hand over heart, as is the tradition, while our national anthem plays before each game. Yet, by Clinton’s misguided standards, any display of patriotism is racist and immoral.
