Robert Mueller, special counsel in charge of the Russia-Trump investigation, has been coming under fire recently for not being nearly as “independent” as he should be. With past friendships and connections coming to light that may undermine his neutrality in the investigation, he is finding himself under more and more pressure to resign.
Recently, a conservative House Republican had the courage to warn the prosecutor that he is crossing a red line. Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, is demanding Mueller resign, bringing to attention a conflict of interest that exists because of Mueller’s “close friendship” with former FBI director James Comey. Franks claimed that Mueller had a friendship with James Comey, who was fired by Trump back in May. However, reports suggest that Mueller is investigating President Trump for a possible obstruction of justice charge as a result of the firing.
“Those who worked under them have attested he and Jim Comey possess a close friendship,” said Franks, “and they have delivered on-the-record statements effusing praise of one another. No one knows Mr. Mueller’s true intentions, but neither can anyone dispute that he now clearly appears to be a partisan arbiter of justice.” (via The Independent)
Mueller was Comey’s predecessor from 2001-2013, and the two have a personal and professional relationship that dates back to the Bush administration, where they served closely alongside each other.
James Comey testified before the Senate that he orchestrated the leaking of memos he wrote while still FBI director specifically to get a special counsel appointed after Trump fired him. That special prosecutor just happened to be Mueller, his close friend.
“Mueller is in clear violation of federal code and must resign to maintain the integrity of the investigation into alleged Russian ties,” Franks stated. “Already, this investigation has become suspect – reports have revealed at least four members of Mueller’s team on the Russia probe donated to support Hillary Clinton for president, as President Trump pointed out. These obviously deliberate partisan hirings do not help convey impartiality.” (via Daily Caller)
Mueller has hired 15 attorneys so far, 13 of which are publicly identified. It turns out that seven of the 13 lawyers have donated to Democratic candidates, including Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Mueller has hired lawyers to work on the investigation who have publicly donated to Obama and Hillary Clinton. Do you believe the investigation is independent?
Trump brought this fact to attention, telling Fox News, “The people that have been hired are all Hillary Clinton supporters. Some of them worked for Hillary Clinton. I mean the whole thing is ridiculous, if you want to know the truth, from that standpoint.” (via Washington Post)
With these facts now revealed, it’s hard to see how this investigation is supposed to be “independent” when Mueller’s team consists of ardent pro-Democrat lawyers.
Trent Franks is right; Mueller needs to recuse himself from the investigation. That is the only way this investigation will be independent.
