Many Republicans are frustrated with the one-sided Russia “collusion” narrative being pushed every day, and after several months of non-stop coverage on this non-issue, some are trying to take the fight back to the left.
Newt Gingrich, in an interview with Fox News, said, “This whole thing is now so totally one-sided and basically a witch hunt,” and he let Americans know that Trump has had to face six months of “insanity” from the left and the media on this Russia narrative. The left, according to Gingrich, has created an environment where it’s “reasonable for any Russian influence on the Clintons to be investigated.” (via Fox News)
Gingrich’s comments come after Trump’s most recent tweets, in which he criticized Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his weak stance regarding Clinton’s corruption. “Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken a VERY weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes (where are E-mails and DNC server) & Intel leakers!” (via Trump on Twitter)
Although some have criticized Trump’s comments for going after a staunch conservative such as Sessions, one of the first people to support Trump’s candidacy, Gingrich understands why Trump would want a parallel investigation into the Clintons and their numerous scandals.
“I think what he’s saying is exactly what his message says. He is saying you have the Clinton foundation, you have the swap for Uranium with the Russians, you have millions of dollars coming out of a secret Canadian foundation that was funded by the Russians, you have Bill Clinton getting a half-million dollar speech in Moscow, you go down the list. I think what he’s saying is why isn’t there a parallel investigation…it’s basically a witch hunt…there were people suggesting that a clerical error which was fixed within 12 hours was somehow comparable to the Nixon 19-minute tape erasing. This is the kind of insanity that the president has faced every single day.” (via Fox News)
Gingrich continued, mentioning how if Donald Trump, Jr. can come under fire for a 15-minute conversation with a Russian lawyer (whose connections to the DNC and the anti-Trump research group Fusion GPS are suspicious enough on their own), then why couldn’t an investigation be launched into the Clinton campaign chairman’s brother, who was a registered lobbyist for a Russian bank?
“In a sense, the left has brought on itself, creating an environment in which it is now totally reasonable to go back and re-open the Clinton Foundation story, and ask if we want to look at Russian influence, there was a lot more money going to the Clintons by any standard,” said Gingrich. Even more pressing is the fact that after all this time there has been no evidence of collusion on Trump’s side at all. Andrew McCarthy, former assistant U.S. attorney for New York and contributor to the National Review, said there was no conspiracy at all between the Trump campaign and the Russians, but there were crimes on Hillary Clinton’s campaign that the media was indifferent to covering.
Justice needs to be served, and those on the left, like Hillary Clinton who broke the law, need to be fairly investigated and tried — not shielded by the media.
