So who is Antifa? It is a leftist group that uses black bloc tactics to fight actual Nazis. However, when you take a closer look, you can easily see that this is not the case.
According to Breitbart, on Sunday, CNN published a piece entitled “Unmasking the Leftist Antifa Movement,” wherein they characterized the group as a grassroots organization that demonstrates against bigotry and fascism.
The piece begins by telling the story of Keval Bhatt, an Antifa member who was involved in the riots that took place during President Donald Trump’s inauguration,
“On the morning of Donald Trump’s inauguration, Keval Bhatt hunted through a closet in his parents’ Virginia home for the darkest clothes he could find,” CNN reports. “The 19-year-old didn’t own much in black, the color he knew his fellow protesters would wear head to toe on the streets of Washington that day.”
Bhatt was later arrested at the protests. The CNN piece portrayed Antifa as a fringe group that is not affiliated with the Democratic Party. Many believe that the organization is being funded by leftist billionaire George Soros.
There are several things that are wrong with the CNN piece. While they admit that Antifa engages in violence — it whitewashes the actual reality of the black bloc tactics the organizations uses. “Antifa leaders admit they’re willing to physically attack anyone who employs violence against them or who condones racism — as long as force is used in the name of eradicating hatred,” CNN writes.
The other problem with the piece is that the author repeatedly states that Antifa protests and uses violence against Nazis and other hate groups. The article never mentions the fact that most of Antifa’s violent actions are committed against normal conservatives who have no ties to Neo Nazi groups or the Ku Klux Klan.
Antifa staged violent riots in order to prevent conservative speakers Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter from giving speeches at UC Berkeley in California. They have physically attacked participants in pro-Trump and Free Speech rallies. They are known for using weapons like clubs, smoke bombs, pepper spray, and others. A typical Antifa protest involves attacking individuals with whom they disagree, setting fires, and damaging property. There is a reason why New Jersey’s Homeland Security Department has labeled Antifa a domestic terrorist group.
CNN also notes that Antifa was present during the incident at Charlottesville, VA where a counter protester was killed by a white supremacist. The protesters claim Antifa started the violence. Of course, the leftist protesters state that it was the white supremacists who showed aggression first. While nobody knows who actually started the violence, it has been shown that Antifa has been the aggressor in the encounters they have had with conservative rally goers.
CNN characterized ANTIFA as a grassroots organization that demonstrates against bigotry and fascism. Are they legitimizing this domestic terror group?
Later in the piece, CNN provides a bit of a justification for the actions of the hard left group. They report that the reason for their embrace of political violence stems from President Trump encouraging violence at his rallies. While some viewed the president’s actions as inappropriate in those situations, it does not provide an excuse for groups like Antifa. Trump never asked his supporters to show up at leftist events with weapons and masks to physically attack anti-Trump protesters.
Make no mistake, Antifa is not a group of freedom fighters who crusade against the evils of fascism; indeed, they use fascist brown shirt tactics to prevent individuals with whom they disagree from exercising their First Amendment rights. Their goal is to silence anyone who disagrees with them.
This is why they call everyone who is on the right a “Nazi” or “fascist.” They use these words to justify their actions — even though these words do not accurately portray their political opposition. Americans on both the left and the right must repudiate these types of groups. Law enforcement needs to be allowed to do their part to keep these people from causing more violence. Otherwise, we are bound to see a repeat of Charlottesville.
