It’s been awhile since Democrats and the liberal media have started pushing the Trump and Russia collusion narrative, and it seems they may be running out of steam.
One news network struggling to justify the continued onslaught is CNN. In June, network executives told their investigative team to back off the narrative after an embarrassing fake news report caused three journalists to resign, according to The Daily Caller.
CNN has been struggling to save face in recent months. With the scandalous severed head incident with Kathy Griffin, the President of the United States singling them out as fake news, and an untimely false story that proved the allegations true, CNN is no doubt thinking of retreating to safer waters in the news realm.
The retracted story that caused three resignations was a report claiming that Trump’s advisor, Anthony Scaramucci, had ties to a Russian investment fund, according to the New York Times. These ties supposedly caught the attention of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who was investigating the Trump-Russia allegations. The belief was that Scaramucci was using this tie to push the removal of certain sanctions against Russia with Trump in office.
Despite some concerns from CNN’s legal team over the legitimacy of the story, the report was published. Within a short time, Scaramucci rebuked the article, fact checkers discovered numerous flaws, and the singular source used in the article was upset with how the information he provided was presented.
The article was only up for a day before CNN retracted it from their site, and issued an apology to Scaramucci. Network officials only gave a simple explanation for the retraction, stating, “That story did not meet CNN’s editorial standards.”
The article was a huge embarrassment for the network, leading many to question the legitimacy of their investigative journalism techniques. Executives had to pull the plug on all stories related to Russia and Trump that didn’t have prior editorial approval.
After the article’s retraction, President Trump was quick to gloat about CNN getting caught in a fake news scandal on his twitter feed, saying “Wow, CNN had to retract big story on ‘Russia,’ with 3 employees forced to resign. What about all the other phony stories they do? FAKE NEWS!”
Though CNN hasn’t entirely abandoned pushing the Russian collusion narrative, it does give insight into the trepidation some media outlets may have about pushing the liberal attack. Given the lack of cold hard evidence, despite a lengthy ongoing investigation, and minimal public interest, CNN’s timidness to publish stories on the topic is understandable.
CNN execs said to back off Trump-Russia narrative. Good start, but is CNN STILL fake news?
According to Politico, even some Democrats have become concerned that their favorite conspiracy theory is beginning to wear on voters’ nerves. Bill Burton, a Democratic consultant, says that even Democrat voters who believe in the allegations are growing tired of the endless obsession.
Speaking on Democrat voters, Burton said, “In the races where I’m working, I think voters think that Russia is important and that the questions need to get answered. But they’re mostly sick of hearing about it, and they want to hear politicians talk about things that are more directly important in their lives.”
With waning interest among Democratic voters, and the risk of stories easily becoming fake news and given the lack of evidence in the investigation, news outlets and politicians will (hopefully) put the narrative to rest and move on. If CNN is already considering moving on, then it won’t be long before other news outlets do as well.
