Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the rest of the Trump administration have been unified in their defense of the border and cracking down on illegal immigration. However, one liberal state continues to stand against our president’s efforts.
In a move that completely counters the efforts Trump has made to secure the southern border, California Labor Commissioner Julie Su has directed state employees to refuse ICE agents entrance into the department’s offices without a warrant, according to Breitbart.
Su issued a directive last month that seeks to protect undocumented immigrants within the state of California and has recently taken one step further in choosing to protect the interests of undocumented immigrants over American citizens. Assemblyman David Chui (D-San Francisco) went so far as to say, “The atmosphere of fear created by Trump and ICE’s expanded dragnet hurt all California workers. We have to do everything to fight back.”
Even worse, the Sacramento City Unified School District trustees unanimously voted to make their schools “sanctuaries” or “safe havens” from federal immigration enforcement. California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye has demanded the federal government stop their efforts against undocumented immigrants.
Republican Senator Jim Nielson was one of the few voices of reason in the state and said, “I think it’s a black mark on California to have agencies of the state advocating the violation of federal law,” Breitbart reported.
It’s shocking to think how a state can operate in such defiance of the president’s directives. These efforts not only compromise national security, they also obstruct the Department of Justice from doing its job.
Attorney General Sessions and Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly returned fire at the efforts of these California leaders, saying “such policies threaten public safety, rather than enhance it.” Sessions also criticized Sakauye’s interpretation of the law, saying, “your characterization of federal law enforcement officers is particularly troubling.”
Sanctuary policies such as those being encouraged in California are one of the main reasons people make the dangerous crossing across the southern US border and only serve to help keep the human trafficking trade in business.
Many would remember the recent deaths of 10 illegal immigrants in San Antonio, Texas, where people were smuggled across the border in a sealed truck. People had to take turns breathing through a hole in the wall to avoid succumbing to heat stroke and dehydration. Many lost the battle, and their lives. If those unfortunate victims weren’t lured by the prospect of living in sanctuary cities, they would still be alive.
The State of California has, from the start, thwarted federal law to harbor undocumented immigrants. Do you believe this usurpation of federal law deserves harsh action?
This isn’t the first effort by California’s leadership to stand in opposition to the rest of the nation. In fact, California recently launched an official ballot incentive asking for signatures to support California succession from the US, although this isn’t the first time the idea of a California succession (CalExit) has surfaced. A previous group withdrew their plans back in April, but it is a worrying trend all the same.
For those who wonder what a government led by progressives would look like, you need not look any further than California. Their defiance of both federal law, as well as common sense, are an embarrassment to themselves as well as to our nation.
Hopefully, common sense will prevail in California some day. But it doesn’t seem as if it’s going to be anytime soon.
