Tragedy strikes again in the US leaving dead and dying in the streets. But this wasn’t another mass shooting that liberals can hang gun control talking points on.
According to Breitbart, 8 people were killed and 11 wounded over the weekend. This terrible tragedy occurred in Chicago, were rampant gun violence is continuing to be the norm.
The Chicago Tribune reports that one of the victims’ deaths, Cynthia Trevillion–a 64-year-old math teacher working at Chicago Waldorf School, was the result of a stray bullet. She was in the Roger Parks neighborhood when a bullet from a drive-by shooting fatally struck her in the head.
A 19-year-old man was in a fist fight with someone who later returned in a vehicle and shot him. He was taken to Advocate Christ hospital where they were able to tend to his wounds. His condition is currently stable.
Perhaps the most common type of shooting in Chicago occurred in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Victor Carillo, a 52-year-old man, was sitting in his parked car when he was shot in the chest. A similar shooting occurred shortly before when two young men were shot by a gunman who walked up to the car they were sitting in and shot them both.
The total count of gun-related homicides in Chicago this year is 558 with 3,014 wounded as a result of the violence. Last year 800 people were killed with 4,400 shot.
According to The Daily Caller, the police are struggled to combat the gun violence, their efforts focused solely on stemming the flow of illegal weapons into the city. Despite gun control legislation, violent gang members and other murderous individuals are using illegally obtained guns in what can only be described as a crime epidemic, and one that has plagued the city for years.
Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told reporters that going after the weapons is often times futile. “You are a single salmon swimming upstream at Niagara Falls,” he said. “If your policing strategy is to decrease the number of guns in your city, good luck, because there are too many guns out there. It’s better to go after the person with the gun.”
Nevertheless, police are going after the illegal trafficking of weapons in the hopes of rooting out sources and disrupting supply chains. Police use bribes and sting operations to take down individual dealers, the main suppliers of illegal weapons, in the hopes of stemming the tide.
Some have criticized the use of bribes or informants claiming it inflates demand and incentivizes more illicit business. Katharine Tinto, a law professor familiar with such tactics, says, “You have this specter of whether it’s creating crime, which is troubling to a lot of people. It’s not as if you’re trying to get someone [who] you know is a violent gun offender. You’re going after someone and purposely trying to entice them into doing a felony.”
Chicago has some of the most strict gun laws in the nation. Do gun laws stop crime?
President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Session have stepped in to try and assist local law enforcement officials in combatting the ongoing gun violence. In June, ATF agents were sent in to work with local officers to form the Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force. The Strike Force investigates shootings and goes after traffickers using ballistics technology and other methods to identify the more violent offenders and disrupt supply chains.
Chicago has been the source of a great deal of fear and pain as gun violence ravages its citizens. Hopefully, law enforcement, with the cooperation of the DOJ, can find a way to stem the tide of violence and get at the heart of why crime has been so bad in Chicago for so many years.
