During an NBC Today appearance, former-Vice President Joe Biden took questions from the audience. One answer, in particular, was alarming.
As The Washington Times reported, an audience member asked: “How do you justify the Democratic [Party’s] view on gun control when the shooter was stopped by a man who was legally licensed to carry a gun?” Mr. Biden responded, saying: “Well, first of all, the kind of gun being carried he shouldn’t be carrying.”
Although it’s not entirely clear which “he” Mr. Biden referred to — the killer, Devin Kelley, or the hero that intervened, Stephen Willeford — the answer is still alarming because both men wielded the same firearm.
Mr. Biden continued, “I wrote the last serious gun control law that was written and was law for 10 years, and it outlawed assault weapons and it outlawed weapons with magazines that had a whole lot of bullets and so you can kill a whole lot of people a lot more quickly.”
Devin Kelley used an AR-15 rifle — deemed an “assault weapon” by the Left — to carry out his massacre at the Sutherland Springs, Texas church shooting earlier this month. The rampage left 26 dead and 20 injured. Multiple criminal acts in Kelley’s history should have prohibited him from purchasing the firearm in the first place, but Air Force officials’ failure to report the charges prevented it from showing up on Kelley’s federal background check.
Kelley was stopped by a local man, Stephen Willeford. Willeford, a former NRA instructor, retrieved his own AR-15 and confronted Kelley. While taking cover behind a vehicle, Willeford engaged in a shootout with Kelley, successfully striking the killer twice before Kelley fled the scene.
Many on the Left responded to the incident by calling for bans on AR-15 rifles. Senate Democrats introduced a bill that would ban those firearms, despite the fact that Willeford successfully used one to end the attack, likely saving additional lives.
By Mr. Biden arguing that AR-15 rifles should never be obtainable, he is also arguing against law-abiding citizens such as Willeford from possessing weapons capable of stopping a massacre.
During interviews with Willeford, he attributed his successfully halting Kelley’s rampage to both his training and the firepower of the AR-15.
“If I had run out of the house with a pistol and faced a bulletproof vest and Kevlar and helmets, it might have been futile,” he said during an interview with Stephen Crowder. “I ran out with an AR-15 and that’s what he was shooting the place up with,” Willeford added.
Mr. Biden’s answer shouldn’t come as a surprise. He was a staunch gun control advocate during the Obama administration and made repeated demands of Congress to pass gun control measures. After the Sandy Hook massacre in late 2012, Mr. Biden advocated for new gun bans alongside a gun violence group, as well as stronger background and mental health checks prior to gun purchases.
After tragic shootings, Democrats are always quick to talk “gun control.” Does liberal ideology transgress the Second Amendment?
Mr. Biden failed to offer clarification in his answer on Today, or the general ownership of so-called “assault rifles,” instead of focusing on mentally disturbed individuals’ possession of firearms. He concluded by saying, “Now the fact that some people with guns are legally able to acquire a gun and they turn out to be crazy after the fact, that’s life. There’s nothing you can do about that. But we can save a lot of lives, and we’ve stopped tens of thousands of people from getting guns who shouldn’t have guns.”
If, in fact, Mr. Biden and other Democrats support the complete ban of AR-15s, it would be a dangerous assault on the 2nd Amendment, and the ability for Americans to defend their lives and property. Nationwide consequences should not be inflicted due to the tragedies inflicted by a handful of deranged individuals. This is an issue that must be approached cautiously, and Constitutionally.
