After losing to Hillary Clinton in the primaries that were rigged against him, and with his wife under investigation by the FBI, Bernie Sanders has had a rough year.
Now, claims that Sanders could be involved in a scandal of his own are surfacing. It seems that the “Socialist Democrat” is allegedly stealing newspapers from his own neighbors. (via Independent Journal Review)
Socialism has been on the rise in America, and many are embracing the concept of distributing wealth from the rich to the poor and free services for everyone. At the forefront of this movement is Bernie Sanders, a self-proclaimed “Socialist Senator” who rose to prominence in the primaries for his stance on free healthcare, free education, and raising taxes on the rich.
It appears that for Sanders, these beliefs aren’t just a political platform to try and win elections; he might actually practice socialism in his personal life.
Chris Plante, host of the radio show WMAL, a talk show station that discusses political topics, alleged that Sanders was stealing his neighbor’s newspapers. He claimed to have been told by neighbors of Bernie Sanders that he has been stealing their Washington Post newspaper every Sunday for several weeks.
They reportedly made a complaint to the Washington Post saying they weren’t receiving their newspaper and threatened to cancel their subscription. The Post had their delivery man pay close attention to who was taking the newspaper and had this description: “an older man with gray hair, balding and little round glasses.” (via Redstate)
The neighbor responded back, saying, “I’m like, you know, in my 50’s and I’ve got a full head of dark hair. But, my neighbor is Bernie Sanders.” (via Redstate)
Unfortunately for socialists, the law doesn’t support common ownership. According to Title 18 in the U.S. Code, newspaper theft is a crime punishable by a fine, with up to one year in prison. If found guilty of the crime, Bernie Sanders could find himself going to jail for stealing his neighbor’s newspapers.
The timing of this newspaper scandal is terrible for the senator, whose wife is currently embroiled in a major bank fraud scandal. The FBI has been investigating Jane Sanders for her misrepresentation of Burlington College’s ability to pay for a piece of land costing $10 million.
The fraud forced the school to go into foreclosure and Jane Sanders was asked to resign in 2011. As it stands, the FBI is still determining whether the misrepresentation was an act of intentional deception or incompetence.
Bernie Sanders considers himself a socialist and advocates for government-provided healthcare and education regularly. Do you believe socialism would be detrimental to the U.S.?
Though nothing has been confirmed, if the allegations of newspaper theft prove true, it would deal a blow to Sanders’ reputation if he attempts to run for presidential office again in 2020.
However, the scandal would support the claim he made in the primaries of him being less wealthy than his colleagues. “I remain one of the poorer members of the United States Senate.” If Sanders doesn’t feel he can afford to shell over $2.65 a week it would be evidence of meager finances. But his three houses might speak to the contrary. (via Politifact)
Let’s hope the socialist movement doesn’t catch too much momentum in the U.S., or we might find our own newspapers disappearing more regularly.
