An unlikely alliance is forming between staunch atheists and conservative Christians in the battle over free speech.
Notorious atheist Richard Dawkins penned an open letter to Berkeley’s KPFA Radio after the station canceled their event where Dawkins was scheduled to discuss his new memoir A Brief Candle in the Dark. KPFA cited concerns of “hurtful speech,” in a statement announcing the cancellation.
“We had booked this event based entirely on his excellent new book on science when we didn’t know he had offended and hurt – in his tweets and other comments on Islam – so many people. KPFA does not endorse hurtful speech,” the statement read. “While KPFA emphatically supports serious free speech, we do not support abusive speech.”
Dawkins’s event was cancelled in the same week that the Royal Society named his earlier book The Selfish Gene the most influential science book ever written, according to The Guardian.
In an open letter to KPFA Radio, Dawkins decried the decision to cancel his event. He explained that he was once a daily listener of the radio station when he lived in Berkley for two years. Dawkins said he was always impressed by the radio station’s commitment to objectivity and their tendency to rigidly fact check and provide sources.
“My memory of KPFA is that you were unusually scrupulous about fact-checking. I especially admired your habit of always quoting sources,” Dawkins wrote in the open letter. “You conspicuously did not quote a source when accusing me of ‘abusive speech.’ Why didn’t you check your facts – or at least have the common courtesy to alert me – before summarily canceling my event?”
Dawkins emphatically rejected the claims of KPFA and demanded that they provide evidence of his supposed “abusive speech.” The atheist said he is expecting an open apology from the far-Left radio station.
Attempting to convey a sense of nuance to Berkeley radicals, Dawkins explained that while he is a frequent and vocal critic of Islamism, he has never said a bad thing about Muslims.
“I have criticized the appalling misogyny and homophobia of Islam, I have criticized the murdering of apostates for no crime other than their disbelief. Far from attacking Muslims, I understand – as perhaps you do not – that Muslims themselves are the prime victims of the oppressive cruelties of Islamism, especially Muslim women,” Dawkins wrote in response. “I am known as a frequent critic of Christianity and have never been de-platformed for that. Why do you give Islam a free pass? Why is it fine to criticize Christianity but not Islam?”
The Leftist media is going so far as to censor their own champions, one being Richard Dawkins. Has the media turned into an ideological ruling class?
Here, Dawkins gained the support of conservative Christians who are also battling for the right to free speech on increasingly authoritarian college campuses. American Christians have been forced to stand back and watch the unrelenting assault on their faith, only for Muslims to receive special treatment from the same people waging war on Christianity.
The Left is quickly losing support as they push increasingly towards authoritarian principles.
The Left has fully embraced oppressive tactics after obtaining only a modicum of power over academia. How far would they go if granted real power?
