Violence from certain factions of the left has unfortunately become commonplace this year. Those who just cannot accept President Trump’s election have been the most violent of all.
On Inauguration Day, violence erupted in the streets, and buildings were attacked by protesters with spray paint and bricks. This week, one such protester, Dan Powell, was sentenced to three years in prison for his actions. (via Breitbart)
The 31-year-old Powell was participating in a protest on Inauguration Day when he was arrested. The man was part of the “Black Bloc” — a group who wore outfits made entirely of black with scarves, gloves, masks, and goggles. They carried a black flag and marched on the streets with hammers and gas masks in tow.
Powell was one of 234 people arrested for connections to Black Bloc’s riots. According to the Justice Department, Powell admitted to shattering windows of businesses and “throwing a brick, large rock, or piece of concrete at uniformed law enforcement officers during the riot.”
They were drawn to the protest through a call to arms via “DisruptJ20”. “DisruptJ20” was sponsored by a collection of activists in the area who sought to disrupt the presidential inauguration. They even went so far as to house, feed, and provide legal assistance to volunteers for their efforts.
Witnesses to the rioting said the entire thing was organized chaos. Protesters chained themselves to security checkpoints, anti-Trump chants filled the air and masses of people filled the streets when the Black Bloc arrived. Some of the protesters turned the protests into a violent riot when they began attacking police, forcing law enforcement to take physical action against the rioters.
The Black Bloc rioters were able to get within one mile of the White House before law enforcement was able to stop them. During their march they smashed windows, attacked cops with various items, and caused chaos.
The American Civil Liberties Union rose up to defend the Black Bloc protestors in June by filing a counter lawsuit suing the Metropolitan Police Department. The complaint states that the rioters were there to display their right to freedom of speech and assembly, and the police’s actions using tear gas and pepper spray denied them that opportunity. They also alleged abuse to the rioters at the hands of law enforcement.
During the trial to determine Powell’s involvement in the riots, a video was released showing him with only his eyes visible and carrying a hammer, anarchist flag, and gas mask. The plaintiff in the case said about Powell, “He came to the District of Columbia to engage in violence by hiding his face, throwing rocks and running. He’s a violent coward.” (via Tampa Bay Times)
Protesting is peaceful. Rioting violates the rights of others and cannot be tolerated. Do you agree? Let your voice be heard in the poll below!
The defense lawyer acting on Powell’s behalf tried to defend his actions saying he was “worried about the direction of this country” and his actions during the riot got “carried away”.
Powell is the first of the rioters to be sentenced from this instance, but hopefully not the last. What is most shocking is the increasing support the members of “Black Bloc” are receiving from some on the left. Do they see these home-grown terrorists-in-training as ‘heroes’ of the liberal agenda? If so, what does that say about the liberal agenda?
