Over the weekend, 6 people were brutally killed and 35 wounded on U.S. soil and the mainstream media is being quiet about it.
What’s even more disturbing is the violence experienced over the weekend isn’t part of a terrorist attack against the U.S. The 6 dead represent what’s becoming a growing problem of gun violence in Chicago and it’s terrifying. (via Chicago Sun Times)
The 6 dead and 35 wounded occurred within a shockingly short period of two days. The reasons for the violence range from homicidal theft to random acts of violence. Examples include a food delivery driver who was shot during an attempted robbery of his truck, and another man was shot for no apparent reason while riding his bike.
Most heartbreaking was the death of Gustavo Garcia, a 10-year-old who was riding in an SUV when a car pulled up alongside and opened fire on the SUV. The boy was struck and taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
The trending violence in Chicago caused Trump to tweet in late June, “Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help. 1714 shootings in Chicago this year.” (via President Trump via Twitter)
The “federal help” Trump sent were 20 agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to work with local law enforcement to create the Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force. Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says the purpose of the task force is “foundationally changing the way we fight crime in Chicago. This new strike force will significantly help our police officers stem the flow of illegal guns and create a culture of accountability for the small subset of individuals and gangs who disproportionately drive violence in our city.” (via The Atlantic)
Many liberals have been critical of Trump’s attempts to stop the violence in Chicago, believing the true solution is to establish stricter gun control laws. House Representative Danny K. Davis (D-IL) believes the 20 ATF agents are a waste of resources, saying, “I don’t think we’re going to be able to police ourselves out of the violence… I don’t think the ATF will do much in terms of the violence or the crime.” (via New York Times)
Yet the majority of the violence is caused by gang members who largely have access to guns via illegal channels that wouldn’t be affected by gun control laws. The White House seems aware of this problem as spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded to a question on whether gun control laws would decrease shootings, saying, “I think that the problem there is pretty clear that it’s a crime problem. I think crime is probably driven more by morality than anything else. So I think that this is a law enforcement issue and our focus is trying to add additional support.” (via LA Times)
Chicago has strict gun laws and overwhelming violence. Do you support President Trump’s crime fighting efforts?
Trump’s attempt at a solution is a welcome change from the standard Democratic approach of policy without action. A liberal president would likely pass stricter gun control laws that would infringe on the Second Amendment rights of citizens while doing little to curb the violence.
The Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force’s effort to remove illegal weapons from the hands of criminals and shut down the illegal gun trade is a conservative and actionable approach to a solution and will hopefully bring the violence under control in Chicago.
At the time of this article 394 people have died this year from gun violence in Chicago. Our prayers go out for the people of this crime-ravaged city and for the families of those who have died.
